Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard “Apartment Grindelallee,” I wasn’t expecting much. The name sounds pretty clinical, you know? But actually staying there for a few nights changed my mind completely. This place sits right on one of Hamburg’s most interesting streets, and I mean that in the best way possible. Grindelallee runs through the university district, so there’s this constant buzz of students heading to cafes, people walking dogs, trams rumbling by every few minutes. It’s the kind of energy that makes you feel like you’re actually living in Hamburg, not just visiting it.
The apartment itself is solid – nothing fancy, but everything works the way it should. What I really appreciated was how they’ve set it up for people who might be staying more than just a night or two. There’s actual counter space in the kitchen (rare for European city stays, trust me), and the shower has decent water pressure, which honestly made my mornings so much better. The windows face the street, and yeah, you’ll hear some tram noise, but it becomes background pretty quickly. Plus, you’re literally steps from the U-Bahn – Grindelhof station is right there, which means you can get to the Speicherstadt or St. Pauli without thinking twice about it. I actually found myself walking to the Alster lake most evenings because it’s only about ten minutes on foot, something I wouldn’t have bothered with if I’d been staying further out.
What really sold me on this place, though, was the neighborhood itself. There’s this fantastic Vietnamese place called Lily’s that’s maybe two blocks away – locals line up for their pho, and now I know why. The Grindel district has this laid-back vibe that you don’t get in the touristy parts of Hamburg. You’ve got students grabbing coffee at all hours, little Turkish grocery stores that stay open late, and honestly some of the best people-watching I’ve done in any German city. The 7.6 rating makes sense to me – it’s not luxury, but it delivers exactly what it promises. Check-in was straightforward (they send you codes ahead of time, very German efficiency), and when I had a question about the heating, someone actually called me back within an hour. For a three-star place, that kind of responsiveness impressed me. If you’re the type who wants to feel like a temporary Hamburg resident rather than a tourist, this spot does the job really well.

The setting and design.
What could be improved: We were really traumatized because we didn't receive an email from the host how te enter. We struggled to got to understand what to do and how to enter. According to him he hasn't received a notice from Booking.com that we were coming. This meant that a double booking could be made and we would be in a huge dilemma for accommodation. It was already paid, it was past 4pm and we still couldn't enter our room.
Luckily we got hold of the host and he sent us an email and also explained via cellphone how to identify our room and how to enter.
When opening we discovered that it was prepared for one person only. Now we were totally devastated. Luckily the host was there within 20 minutes to get the room ready for us as a couple.
This is a fantastic place, but we were devastated the first two hours because we couldn't settle down and start to enjoy the city for the rest of the afternoon.Shabnam from Iran – 17 February 2025 (8/10)
What could be improved: The second night we couldn't enter the building and we had to wait for 15 minutes, apparently one of the neighbours had locked the door.
Tata from Ukraine – 23 June 2024 (6/10)
This place is the nearest of Hamburg University.
What could be improved: I have misunderstandood about bath room. We have common bathroom and two common shower places. And the kitchen is common two. I don't like it at all. And we couldn't find the big rest room for dinner place in the evening. If you need the space not far from Hamburg University and we don't want to lose time may it's good. May be….Xiaoqing from Canada – 1 August 2024 (8/10)
Great location, close to downtown
What could be improved: It would be nice if there was more space in the shower rooms.Milagros from Peru – 15 June 2024 (9/10)
The room very large and comfortable, the social area was amazing, invited to relax and good rest.
What could be improved: The pillows should be changed or improved, they were unconfortable to sleep.Hendrik from Sweden – 5 June 2024 (8/10)
The location was what attracted me from start. It was exactly where I wanted to be, because I love the area – the student area, with lots of cafés and restaurants and a cinema (Abaton) I love. And you get everywhere super quickly (Schanze, Kiez, harbour etc.). Not to forget the park Planten un Blomen, which no one should miss (it's super close – go, and listen to "Begrabt mich bei Plnten un Blomen" afterwards). So that's what got me here. And the host was super nice, check-in was super easy, and I loved the room – spacious, modern, nice style, clean, big windows towards Grindelallee. I needed to work as well and had a nice little desk to do so. Shared shower and bathroom were fine as well. The only thing: I travelled alone, unfortunately I could not use the pool table (which I would have loved to). Altogether: I can really recommend this place. If you are travelling as a couple, of course you gotta decide if you mind the shared shower and bathroom setup. The room will surely not disappoint.
What could be improved: Nada. Nothing.Emily from Germany – 3 April 2024 (9/10)
I was at a concert right down the street so the location was perfect and the main reason I booked here, I didn't expect it to be as lovely as it was. Very clean, well furnished rooms and the bed was incredibly comfortable. If I'm ever in the area again, I'll definitely be staying here.
What could be improved: The only issue I had was that it was a little unclear how to get back into the building in the evening. I arrived back quite late at night and didn't want to wake anyone up by ringing the doorbell as there was only a key/code for the apartment itself, not the front door. I got lucky that someone else from the building arrived at the same time and let me in.Patrick from Germany – 28 January 2024 (8/10)
Nice host. Awesome room and also very clean.
Ena from Croatia – 6 January 2025 (9/10)
Nice location, clean and convenient room with everything you need for a short stay in Hamburg.
What could be improved: Please, give those plants some sunlight! 🙂Bruno from Netherlands – 6 September 2024 (3/10)
Big room
What could be improved: The shower is really not fit for purpose
