Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about the Aussen Alster Hotel, I wasn’t expecting much from a 4-star place in Hamburg. But you know what? Sometimes these mid-tier spots surprise you, and this one actually gets a lot of things right. The name literally means “Outer Alster,” so you can guess what the main draw is here – it’s all about that lake view. And I mean, when you’re staying right on the Aussenalster, you’re basically in Hamburg’s most photogenic neighborhood. The hotel sits in this sweet spot where you can walk to the fancy Pöseldorf district for shopping (think tiny boutiques and overpriced coffee that’s actually worth it), but you’re also close enough to hop on the U-Bahn and be in the city center in maybe fifteen minutes.
The building itself has that classic Hamburg brick thing going on – nothing too flashy, but it fits the vibe of the area perfectly. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night, especially considering you’re still in the city. The Alster has this calming effect, I guess. During the day though, it’s a completely different scene – joggers everywhere, people walking their ridiculously well-behaved German dogs, and in summer, you’ll see folks lounging by the water like they’re at some urban beach resort. The hotel staff seems to really know their stuff about the area too. When I asked about the best route for an early morning run around the lake, the guy at the front desk didn’t just point me toward the obvious path – he actually suggested this quieter stretch near the Krugkoppelbrücke where you avoid most of the foot traffic. That’s the kind of local insight you don’t always get.
Now, with a 7.8 rating, you’re not looking at perfection here, and honestly, that feels about right. The rooms are comfortable without being spectacular – clean, decent-sized by European standards, and the ones facing the water are definitely worth the upgrade if you can swing it. I stayed during one of those typical Hamburg drizzly weeks in October, and there’s something pretty magical about watching the mist roll across the Alster from your window while you’re having your morning coffee. The breakfast spread was solid – proper German bread selection, good coffee, though nothing that’ll blow your mind. What really won me over was the location’s flexibility. You can walk to the Kunstmeile for museums, catch a ferry right from the nearby Anleger for a different perspective of the city, or just wander through Harvestehude if you want to see how the other half lives. It’s one of those places where you feel like you’re staying in a real neighborhood rather than some tourist bubble, which honestly makes all the difference when you’re trying to actually experience Hamburg instead of just checking it off a list.
Hamburg hotels range from charming boutique properties in the historic Speicherstadt warehouse district to elegant harbor-view hotels and modern accommodations near the Elbe River.

Really cozy boutique hotel with a fantastic location close to everything you’ll need. Restaurants, bars, the lake and public transport just around the corner and with a short walk to the central station.
What could be improved: The only thing I thought was disappointing was the quality of the pillows and duvets. They didn’t match the rest of the hotel quality and comfort. Beds was good though.Marc from Belgium – 9 January 2025 (9/10)
The Hotel is very close to the Alster and very easy reachable for Public Transport.
On the Lange Reihe street, again very close by there is a very good supermarket and lots of restarants.
