You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Bed & Breakfast Bigalke – I mean, it’s got that straightforward German name that doesn’t exactly scream “charming getaway.” But honestly, this place completely won me over, and I get why it’s sitting at a 9.3 rating despite being a modest three-star spot.

The thing about this B&B is that it feels like staying at your well-traveled aunt’s house, if your aunt happened to have impeccable taste and actually knew how to make a proper breakfast. The rooms aren’t huge – we’re talking cozy European proportions here – but everything’s been thought through. I’m talking about those little touches that most places miss: reading lights that actually work for reading, shower pressure that doesn’t make you question your life choices, and (this was huge for me) proper blackout curtains that don’t leave that annoying strip of light along the edges. The beds are firm in that good German way, though if you’re used to pillow-top everything, you might need a day to adjust.

What really sets this place apart is the breakfast situation – and look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places where “continental breakfast” means sad pastries and watery coffee. Here, you’re looking at local cheeses, actual crusty bread that tastes like bread, and usually some kind of seasonal fruit situation that changes depending on what’s good. The coffee’s strong enough to wake the dead, which I appreciated since I tend to stay up too late when I’m traveling. The owners (I assume they’re the Bigalkes) are around during breakfast, and they’ve got that perfect balance of being helpful without hovering – they’ll give you directions or restaurant recommendations if you ask, but they’re not going to corner you with their life story while you’re trying to caffeinate. Parking was never an issue when I was there, though I imagine things might get tighter during peak season. The whole place runs quietly too – thick walls, I think, because I never heard my neighbors even though I could see other guests coming and going. Check-in was refreshingly simple, none of that “let me walk you through seventeen amenities you’ll never use” nonsense. Just keys, WiFi password, breakfast times, and you’re set. It’s the kind of place where you actually sleep well and leave feeling like you got good value for your money rather than feeling nickel-and-dimed.

  The most comfortable temporary accommodation in Hamburg, the thoughtful and meticulous care of the heroine and the delicious German breakfast are the biggest highlights. I will stay here again when I come to Hamburg.

  Christina was absolutely amazing and her air b n b was beautiful! The breakfast was unbelievable with an abundance of food. Christina went above and beyond and even let me use her washer/dryer when I was in a pinch. Her home is a very short walk to bus stop/train station. Thank you so much for your hospitality!!

  It was near a train station in Poppenbüttel so we could take an S-train into the city. Room was very spacious and nice and the Bathroom was great. Christina was great. Very friendly and helpful.

  Lovely place with a good room with all you can ask for in a good neighbourhood in Hamburg. We even had a sauna in the bathroom. The bed was comfortabel and they had everything for a family for a very reasonable price.

  Very nice home. We arrived late and our host was super flexible and greeted us in with a smile. We were also given insider tips on how to manage our visit in Hamburg in the most cost efficient manner.
