I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Best Western Hamburg International, I wasn’t expecting much. You know how it is with chain hotels, especially the mid-range ones. But honestly? This place surprised me in ways I didn’t see coming.

The lobby hits you with that clean, efficient German vibe that somehow manages to feel welcoming rather than sterile. Check-in was refreshingly quick (none of that “let me tell you about seventeen amenities you don’t care about” routine), and the staff actually seemed to know Hamburg well enough to give decent recommendations. The woman at the front desk told me about this little café around the corner that honestly became my morning ritual – locals grabbing coffee before work, newspapers in German I couldn’t read but somehow enjoyed flipping through anyway. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 3-star – nothing that’ll make your Instagram explode, but everything works properly. The bed was actually comfortable, which… well, you never really know until you’re there, right? Hot water showed up immediately, the WiFi didn’t make me want to throw my laptop out the window, and the blackout curtains did their job. I mean, Hamburg can stay pretty bright during summer evenings, so that matters more than you’d think.

What really got me was how the hotel sits in the city. It’s not trying to be in the flashy tourist center, but you’re still connected to everything that matters. The U-Bahn station is close enough that you’re not dragging your luggage forever, but far enough that you’re not hearing trains all night. I could walk to the Speicherstadt when I wanted that classic Hamburg warehouse district experience, but I was also near enough to regular neighborhoods where actual Hamburgers live and work. There’s something refreshing about staying somewhere that feels part of the city’s rhythm rather than separate from it. The breakfast was better than it needed to be – proper German bread, decent coffee, and they didn’t skimp on the cold cuts and cheese. Nothing fancy, but it felt authentic in a way that hotel breakfasts often don’t. I actually looked forward to it, which says something.

Look, this isn’t the kind of place you stay to impress anyone or because the hotel itself is the destination. But if you want somewhere reliable that lets Hamburg be the star? The 7.9 rating makes perfect sense to me. It’s earned that score by doing the fundamentals well without any pretense. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need – a place that gets out of your way so you can actually experience the city you came to see.

  The room was comfortable and big, silent and clean. Bed was very comfortable and we easily found a free parking spot. The breakfast was very tasty and vegetarian -friendly, several options were offered.
  The underground is very close, so it is possible to reach the city centre easily and in a short time frame.
