Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about Boutique 53 & 56? The name actually makes sense once you’re there – it’s literally two historic Hamburg buildings (numbers 53 and 56) that they’ve connected into one hotel. Smart, honestly, because you get this interesting mix of old Hamburg character with modern hotel conveniences, though I’ll be upfront – at 3 stars, you’re not getting luxury here.
The location is pretty solid for exploring Hamburg’s city center. I mean, you’re walking distance from the main shopping areas and can easily hop over to the Speicherstadt district if you’re into the whole UNESCO World Heritage thing. What I appreciated was how quiet it gets at night – Hamburg can be surprisingly loud in some areas, but this spot settles down nicely after the business crowd heads home. The rooms themselves are… well, they’re doing their best with what are clearly older buildings. Some have these great high ceilings that make you feel like you’re staying in actual Hamburg history, while others feel a bit cramped. It’s honestly a bit of a room lottery, which might explain that 7.2 rating – totally depends on what you get.
Here’s the thing though – the staff actually knows Hamburg, and I don’t just mean the touristy stuff. When I asked about good places for Franzbrötchen (those cinnamon pastry things Hamburg does so well), the front desk guy didn’t just point me to the nearest bakery but told me about this little place two streets over that locals actually go to. That kind of local knowledge is worth something, especially when you’re trying to get beyond the typical tourist circuit. The breakfast situation is decent – nothing fancy, but they’ve got proper German bread and coffee that doesn’t taste like it’s been sitting around since yesterday. Parking can be a bit of a headache if you’re driving, which honestly, in Hamburg city center, it always is. But the public transport connections are solid, and you’ll probably end up walking more than you planned anyway because Hamburg’s just that kind of walkable city once you get your bearings. Would I stay here again? Probably, if the price was right and I wasn’t looking for anything too fancy – it’s got that practical, no-nonsense vibe that works well for a few days of city exploring.
Apartments in Hamburg provide travelers with an authentic local experience, allowing them to shop at traditional fish markets and cook with fresh ingredients from the renowned North German culinary traditions.

What could be improved: Grumpy staff at reception. It was a bit of a miserable arrival.Tina from Sweden – 18 January 2024 (8/10)
It was a compact single quiet room with a modern standard. Bathroom perfect and bed large and comfortable. The room was a bit cold when I arrived but there was a heater that I could turn on and then it was fine.
What could be improved: The entrance is a bit dodgy. Close to the central station so that was expected, but I knew that and for me it was crucial that I was close to the train station since I had a morning train the next day.John from Philippines – 14 November 2023 (8/10)
Very accessible to central station. Lots of restaurants nearby.
