Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard “boardinghouse,” I pictured some sketchy hostel situation, but the Clipper near Hamburg’s Michel church is actually something pretty special. You know that feeling when you stumble onto a place that’s way better than expected? That’s this spot. It sits in one of those classic Hamburg neighborhoods where you’ve got the famous St. Michaelis church (locals just call it “Michel”) practically in your backyard, and honestly, waking up to those church bells isn’t nearly as annoying as you’d think – there’s something kind of romantic about it.
The whole setup feels like someone took the concept of a boutique hotel and made it actually livable instead of just Instagram-pretty. The rooms have this maritime thing going on – I mean, you’re in Hamburg, so of course they do – but it’s done thoughtfully, not like some cheesy nautical theme restaurant. The beds are genuinely comfortable (and I’m picky about this stuff), and the bathrooms are modern without feeling sterile. What really got me though was how quiet it stays despite being right in the thick of things. You’re literally walking distance from the Speicherstadt and HafenCity, but somehow the street noise doesn’t really penetrate. I think it’s the way the building’s positioned, or maybe just good windows – either way, I slept great.
Here’s what I love about the location – you can walk to the Elbphilharmonie in like fifteen minutes, but you’re also surrounded by these little local spots that most tourists never find. There’s this bakery around the corner where the guy behind the counter actually remembered my order after two days (in German, which made me feel ridiculously accomplished), and the whole Neustadt area has these winding streets perfect for just wandering around. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle if you’re driving – street spots are competitive and the nearest garage is a few blocks away – but honestly, once you’re settled in, you won’t need a car anyway. The U-Bahn connections are solid, and half the fun is just walking through the old merchant quarter. The staff actually knows the neighborhood too, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how rare that is. They’ll point you toward the good stuff – not just the obvious tourist traps, but places where locals actually hang out. It’s that kind of attention to detail that bumps a perfectly nice hotel into something you’d actually recommend to people you care about.

Comfortable and stylish!!!!
Everything you would expect for a self catering unit.
This was like home away from home 🏡 .
Very friendly and helpful staff.
The unit is 100m from the Elbe river where you can get the hop on hop off busses and do a river cruise. Next to the famous St Michel church.Viktoriia from Ukraine – 21 March 2025 (9/10)
It’s an excellent hotel, with beautifully decorated rooms and high-end equipment. Central venue, with lots of restaurants down the street, river bank and Elbphilharmonie in a ten-minute walk. We’ve been staying for the second time in this hotel and will return when again in Hamburg. Highly recommended.

Amazing location, very close to the harbour and within easy walking distance of the city centre and the Alster lake. Really luxurious accommodation, warm and very comfortable. Amazing views from my top floor studio, which even had a large roof terrace.
What could be improved: I had an issue with the heating when I first arrived but this was quickly resolved.Jayda from Australia – 2 January 2025 (9/10)
The accommodation was very clean and comfortable. The amenities were very good and it was an easy location to get around (near train station, 5-10 mins walk).
Self checkin (you will need to notify the staff prior if required after hours checkin) and checkout
What could be improved: There was no 24/7 reception staff.
No conditioner.Gonzalo from Argentina – 6 December 2024 (9/10)
Very nice and comfortable room. Nespresso coffee machine with 2 capsules appreciated. Not for anyone as all check-in was self service. Good for me, not recommended for elderly people, unless you arrive early when there are people to check you in. Lots of restaurants around. I had a meeting very near, so it is the perfect place!!!

Modern, clean, good location, short 5 minute walk from Landungsbrüken train station- direct from Hamburg Airport. Staff were friendly, spoke clear English. Room key is required to enter hotel after check in hours, the extra security was a good idea.
What could be improved: Nothing to complain about, mattress was quite hard/ too firm and I was left with a back ache but that’s personal preference.Robbert from Netherlands – 4 November 2024 (8/10)
Nice location, good for all central neighbourhoods.
What could be improved: Kitchen was very basic. But its probably used not in am extensive wsy by many tourists.David from Indonesia – 14 October 2024 (8/10)
Nice layout, comfortable. My unit had a balcony. Good location close to convenience store and may restaurants. Clean and cleaners came aver few days. Also, very quiet. Hot water came quickly to shower.
What could be improved: I din't really like the fact that there were never any staff on the front desk: the first place that I have ever stayed in in over 50 countries that felt sooo impersonal!! No human touch.
The two pods of coffee were thoughtful but a few T-bags and sugar and a small carton of mile would have been appreciated. Compared to staying in an AirBnB it was very sterile and unwelcoming.Olivia from United Kingdom – 6 October 2024 (9/10)
The location and set up of the apartments. Very practical and clean.
What could be improved: Nothing
