Das Gästehaus der Elb Lounge “Self Check In” Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Das Gästehaus der Elb Lounge \”Self Check In\” on Manteuffelstraße, you immediately get the sense this isn’t your typical hotel experience. The self check-in concept might sound impersonal, but honestly, it works perfectly here — especially after a long travel day when you just want to get settled without waiting around a lobby. This three-star guesthouse sits in Nienstedten, which is one of those Hamburg neighborhoods that locals know about but tourists often miss.
The Nienstedten Advantage
Here’s what I love about this location — you’re actually staying in one of Hamburg’s most elegant residential areas, right along the Elbe River. Nienstedten feels worlds away from the bustling city center, but you’re still connected to everything that matters. The neighborhood has this quiet, almost village-like quality with beautiful old villas and tree-lined streets. Couples absolutely get it (they rate the location 8.8), and I can see why — there’s something romantic about evening walks down to the Elbe waterfront, especially when the light hits the water just right.
Your Room and the Self Check-In Experience
The self check-in process is surprisingly smooth once you get the hang of it. Your room key and instructions arrive digitally, and within minutes you’re settling into a space that’s clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully arranged. The rooms aren’t fancy — this is a three-star property after all — but they have everything you actually need. What strikes me most is how quiet everything is; you know how some city hotels have that constant background hum of traffic and activity? Not here. The thick walls and residential setting mean you’ll actually sleep well.
Morning Routine
The continental breakfast setup works well for this type of property. It’s not elaborate, but you’ll find quality basics — good bread (this is Germany, after all), decent coffee, and fresh options that change slightly day to day. I mean, you’re not coming here for a grand breakfast buffet experience, but it gets your morning started right. The fact that there are more repeat guests here than at most other properties tells you something — people figure out this place works for them and keep coming back.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this guesthouse apart is how it balances independence with comfort. You get the freedom of self check-in and a peaceful residential location, but you’re still close enough to Hamburg’s attractions when you want them. The Elbe is literally a few minutes’ walk away, and getting into the city center is straightforward once you know the local transport connections. Recent guests consistently rate the location highly (8.7), and after staying here, I understand why — it’s that sweet spot where you feel like you’re experiencing Hamburg as locals do, rather than just passing through as another tourist.

Great location
Very clean
What could be improved: No kettles in the rooms
Poor Breakfast for 10€ eachSally from United Kingdom – 14 September 2024 (8/10)
Within easy walking distance of the subway. (There’s a bus that actually stops right outside, although it’s quicker to walk to the subway if the bus is not immediately coming. There’s also more buses that stop just around the corner a 3 minute walk away.) Good location for subway and also (if you take the bus to the river) for river boats into the city. Very nice residential area. Quiet and comfortable. Staff very helpful and friendly.

Everything there one needed. Clean, good location
What could be improved: Space between bed and wall on one side was almost not enough to pass by. That made it very uncomfortable to get in and out on the left side.Alison from United Kingdom – 22 June 2024 (9/10)
Clean and comfy, the Gästehaus der Elb Lounge is so nice and was perfect for our overnight stop in Hamburg. Recommended!
