Hotel Amsterdam Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Hotel Amsterdam on Moorweidenstr feels a bit like discovering a well-kept secret in one of Hamburg’s most coveted neighborhoods. The three-star property sits quietly in Rothenbaum, and honestly, the location alone makes this place worth considering. I mean, you’re practically in the heart of everything that makes Hamburg interesting, but without the chaos of staying right in the tourist center. The building itself has that understated Hamburg charm — nothing flashy, just solid and welcoming in that northern German way.

The Rothenbaum Advantage

Here’s what I love about staying in this area — you’re a short walk from the Alster lakes, which locals actually use for their morning jogs and evening strolls. The neighborhood has this refined, residential feel that couples absolutely adore (apparently they rate the location 9.2 out of 10, and I totally get why). You’ve got the Museum Mile nearby, plus easy access to the Außenalster for those picture-perfect Hamburg moments. What’s really convenient is that you can walk to the main shopping areas, but when you come back to Hotel Amsterdam, you’re in this quieter, more sophisticated pocket of the city.

Rooms and Comfort

The rooms are exactly what you’d expect from a well-run three-star hotel — clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully arranged without any unnecessary frills. I appreciated the attention to practical details, like decent lighting for reading and enough space to actually unpack your suitcase properly. The beds are genuinely comfortable, which matters more than people realize when you’re doing a lot of city walking. You know what impressed me? The rooms feel authentically Hamburg somehow — there’s a certain northern European sensibility in the design that feels honest rather than trying too hard.

Breakfast and Practical Matters

The breakfast setup here is actually quite good — they do both continental and buffet options, so whether you’re the type who wants a quick coffee and pastry or someone who needs a proper German breakfast spread, you’re covered. I found the quality better than expected, with local touches that show they’re paying attention to what guests actually want. Having parking available at the hotel is a real bonus if you’re driving — trust me, finding parking in Hamburg can be a nightmare, so this takes one major headache off your plate.

Why Guests Love It

What makes Hotel Amsterdam work so well is that it delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense. You’re getting solid comfort in one of Hamburg’s best neighborhoods, with staff who seem to genuinely care about making your stay smooth. The location score of 9.2 isn’t just a number — it reflects how perfectly positioned you are to experience Hamburg like someone who actually lives here. Whether you’re planning romantic walks around the Alster or want to explore Hamburg’s cultural scene, you’ll find yourself coming back to a peaceful base that feels more like a neighborhood gem than a tourist hotel.

Reviews of Hotel Amsterdam

  • Erik from Denmark – 8 May 2025 (6/10)

    The location was great

What could be improved: The room was outdated in furniture and style. The charm of the entrance and hallway did not continue in the room. The light color was terrible and the interior felt old and like leftovers.

  • Jepsen from Denmark – 9 December 2024 (6/10)

    Liked the authenticity and location

What could be improved: Please upgrade your breakfast Quality – maybe even theis in some egg varieties.

  • Fiona from Germany – 20 August 2024 (8/10)

    Excellent location

What could be improved: No bar fridge

  • Jan from Czech Republic – 15 November 2023 (8/10)

Suitable location close to Congress Centre. Clean and convenient facilities.
Smart business model. Hotel is just one floor inside of classic urban building. Other floors are different hotel brands.

What could be improved: All fine

  • Laurent from France – 4 September 2023 (8/10)

Very charming bedroom, comfortable, well decorated. Nice location close to Stephenplatz, big public garden, and Alster lake. I did not test the breakfast. The value for money was good, to my opinion.

What could be improved: Wifi was so so for one day, then it came better and I had no issue.

  • Olga from Germany – 26 June 2023 (8/10)

It was very nicely located. I liked a lot that beds were cozy, room was clean, and the building and the room had a nice vibe.

What could be improved: The room on the photo on the booking.com was not the same room provided to us. Little sofa was missing and window view was on the inner garden. Sink for washing hands was outside the bathroom. Which is a bit weird but ok. But I’d not like to stay longer than one/two nights there.

  • Andrea from United Kingdom – 5 April 2023 (8/10)

It is a great location, only a 5 minute walk to the train station.
A quirky hotel with great rooms, and excellent service from the staff.
The breakfast was really fresh, and the waiters were so nice.
Room 14 was a great size, and front facing so the view is great. Also really quiet and no noise from other rooms or outside.

What could be improved: The only two things that let it down were the sofa in my room (14) was looking a little worse for wear, and could do with a deep clean. Other than that the room was immaculate, and it wouldn't stop me staying here again, and recommending it to others.
The WIFI wasn't great in room 14 when trying to do some work, it wasn't great at connecting.

  • Shubham from Germany – 5 March 2023 (6/10)

Room was clean, staff is polite and location is very good! We were traveling with a pet and they were very accommodating of that, although there is an additional charge of 10eur per night payable at the hotel – this was not included in the total cost of booking or informed automatically. Only when we reached out we were told.

What could be improved: There is no private bathroom inside the room, although it is in the same corridor. This is still manageable. However, the shower and sink are located in the room itself, and there is no partitioning!! It is very weird and uncomfortable especially when you're traveling with other people. Would recommend for a short budget stay, but definitely not recommend it for a very long stay just because of the shower situation, unless you're willing to step out when the other person showers :p

  • Tim from United Kingdom – 6 February 2023 (6/10)

Despite being located close to Dammtor station and a major road, our rooms faced a sidestreet and were quiet and dark at night. The operation is slightly weird with 5 different hotels and apartment lets being based within the same characterful older building, Hotel Amsterdam occupying the 2nd floor (via a lift if needed)
Our rooms had copious storage space
The beds were long and extremely comfortable
The lady looking after breakfasts was friendly and helpful

What could be improved: Check-in was perfunctory and information delivered at breakneck speed
The bathroom was absolutely tiny, without working ventilation or heating
Heating for the room itself was via an old (and enormous) water radiator, but the control valve was hidden away and covered by a cupboard so it took us 2 days to discover it

  • Damian from United Kingdom – 21 November 2022 (8/10)

central location only 10 minutes walk away from who I was visiting

What could be improved: the pillow was so soft as to be useless as a pillow, I ended up using a rolled up towel underneath it. I would have preferred all facilities were en-suite
