Hotel Description
You know what? Hotel Blankenese surprised me in the best possible way. I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to this 3-star place, I wasn’t expecting much. But there’s something genuinely charming about the way they’ve kept things simple without cutting corners on the stuff that actually matters. The lobby has this understated elegance that feels more like stepping into someone’s well-appointed home than a typical chain hotel.
The location is honestly what makes this place special, even though it might not jump out at you immediately. You’re right in Blankenese, which – if you haven’t been – is this perfectly preserved fishing village that somehow still exists within Hamburg’s city limits. I mean, we’re talking cobblestone streets and traditional white houses with red tile roofs, the whole nine yards. The Elbe River is literally a five-minute walk away, and you can catch the ferry right into the city center from nearby. What I loved is that you get this village atmosphere (complete with actual fishermen heading out in the morning), but you’re still connected to everything Hamburg has to offer. The staff actually knows the ferry schedules by heart, which tells you they deal with real travelers, not just business folks passing through.
The rooms themselves are… well, they’re what you’d expect from a solid 3-star, but done thoughtfully. Nothing fancy, but the beds are genuinely comfortable and the bathrooms are updated enough that you’re not dealing with that weird European shower situation where you flood the entire floor. I stayed on the third floor and could hear the seagulls in the morning – sounds touristy, I know, but it’s actually pretty nice when you’re used to city traffic. Parking was surprisingly easy too, which anyone who’s driven in Hamburg will tell you is no small thing. Check-in was smooth, though they do close the front desk earlier than some places, so don’t roll in at midnight expecting someone to be waiting. The breakfast spread is nothing to write home about, but it’s fresh and they have proper coffee, not that machine stuff that tastes like brown water.
Here’s the thing – this isn’t going to be your Instagram-worthy luxury experience, and the 7.2 rating probably reflects that some people come expecting more bells and whistles. But if you want to actually experience Hamburg beyond the tourist bubble, and you appreciate staying somewhere that feels connected to the neighborhood it’s in, Hotel Blankenese gets it right. The value is solid, especially considering you’re getting that village charm with easy city access. Just pack layers – being this close to the water means it can get breezy even when the weather forecast looks perfect.

Breakfast was enjoyable, and the room served its purpose perfectly. It was clean, and the bed was comfortable—ideal for a one-night stay. For £100, I wasn’t expecting much, but it exceeded my expectations.
What could be improved: We did ask for an iron at reception, but they didn’t have one. That said, it wasn’t a big issue, and we managed just fine.Raghavendra from India – 2 October 2024 (8/10)
