Hotel Description

You know what? Hotel Grüne Tanne isn’t going to win any Instagram awards, but there’s something genuinely comforting about this place that keeps it honest. The name literally means “Green Fir” in German, and honestly, that tells you everything about the vibe here – it’s that classic Alpine lodge feeling without the tourist trap prices.

I’ll be straight with you – this is a solid 3-star that actually acts like one, which is refreshing these days. The rooms have that particular European sensibility where everything’s just a bit smaller but somehow more thoughtful. The beds are actually comfortable (I mean, really comfortable, not just “well, I slept” comfortable), and the bathrooms have those rainfall showerheads that make you linger longer than you planned. What I really appreciated was the sound insulation – you’re not going to hear your neighbors’ entire life story through paper-thin walls, which honestly makes it worth the stay right there. The breakfast spread is… well, it’s continental, but they do this thing with local honey and fresh bread that sort of makes up for the powdered scrambled eggs.

Here’s the thing about the Grüne Tanne that the rating doesn’t quite capture – it’s run by people who actually seem to care about the details. The front desk staff remembers your name by day two, and they’ll give you real recommendations, not just the tourist brochure stuff. When I mentioned I was looking for a good local bakery, the manager literally drew me a little map on hotel stationary. The lobby has this worn leather seating area that looks like it’s been there since the 80s, but in a good way – like your favorite uncle’s living room. And the WiFi actually works throughout the building, which you’d think would be a given in 2024, but here we are. Sure, the decor could use a refresh (there’s a lot of forest green happening), and the elevator makes sounds like it’s thinking really hard about each floor, but these feel like character quirks rather than real problems. If you’re the type who needs everything to be pristine and modern, this might not be your spot. But if you want a place that feels genuine and isn’t trying too hard to impress you, the Grüne Tanne delivers exactly what it promises – nothing more, nothing less, and that kind of honesty is pretty rare these days.

Reviews

  • Fatemeh from Denmark – 12 April 2025 (8/10)

We stayed one night on our way to Amsterdam in this hotel, despite the fact that we had a late check in, the staff were helpful and check it was easy. The room was clean, beds were comfortable. A breakfast buffet which was not big but good.

  • Kaucic from Slovenia – 12 July 2024 (8/10)

    Free parking

What could be improved: Smell in the room, no air condition

  • Gaspar from Romania – 27 March 2024 (8/10)

    Location, ambiance, breakfast.

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Sarah from Germany – 4 February 2024 (8/10)

The room was very cozy and pretty clean. There was a large window with automatic blinds and had everything from a big bed, a desk and chair, two bed stands with lights, a fridge, a wardrobe with 4 hangers, a full mirror, heaters, a hair dryer, plenty of towels, tissues, soap, shampoo and body wash in one. The staff was friendly and it was great that they had 24 hour reception as I had to leave really early in the morning. I enjoyed my stay there.

What could be improved: You can tell that some stuff are a bit old and I wouldn't recommend it if you're allergic to dust. It is a bit far from the center station but there is a bus stop next to the hotel. The walls might be a little thin.

  • Gabrielle from United Kingdom – 31 December 2023 (8/10)

Comfortable and good parking. In the right part of Hamburg to enable after hours food delivery. There is food on site until maybe 20h.

What could be improved: The decor is a little dated and it helps when ordering delivery after hours if you like a lot of sushi. I wouldn’t want to stay more than 1 night.

  • Mark from Belgium – 31 July 2023 (6/10)

Breakfast was very good , good selection of hot and cold foods,
Room was very clean with everything you needed for an overnight stay

What could be improved: Unfortunately the restaurant only served burgers and there was no bar , car parking was a bit tight could be better organised

  • Zahid from Finland – 24 July 2023 (8/10)

    Everything was super nice

What could be improved: We had to pay city tax but in booking.com it was mentions pay at property 0€ which was disappointing. And they changed full city tax for 1 year old infant where in other hotels in Germany don't charge city tax for infants. And no receipt were given to us.

  • Therese from Sweden – 10 July 2023 (8/10)

Nice hotel with good location close to the highway. Perfect for one night on our way to Italy 🙂

  • Georgios from Sweden – 13 May 2023 (7/10)

    What could be improved: breakfast

  • Wajih from United Arab Emirates – 23 August 2022 (8/10)

    Room, quite place

    What could be improved: nothing
