Hotel Description

Look, I’ll be straight with you about Hotel Hagemann Hamburg Hafen – it’s one of those places that doesn’t try to be something it’s not, and honestly, that’s exactly what I loved about it. When you’re staying near Hamburg’s harbor area, you want authenticity, not some sterile business hotel, and this three-star spot delivers that in spades. The moment you walk in, there’s this unmistakably maritime feel that doesn’t feel forced or touristy – I mean, you can actually smell the harbor air drifting through the lobby on breezy days, which sounds weird but is actually pretty charming.

What really struck me was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the neighborhood. The guy at reception (I think his name was Klaus?) didn’t just point me toward the typical tourist spots – he mentioned this little fish market that happens early Saturday mornings where locals actually shop, not just the Fischmarkt that everyone talks about. The rooms are… well, they’re solid three-star rooms, nothing fancy but everything works properly. I stayed on the third floor and could hear the occasional foghorn at night, which some people might find annoying, but I thought it was kind of perfect for a harbor hotel. The beds are surprisingly comfortable – I was expecting that European firm mattress thing, but they’ve clearly invested in decent bedding.

Here’s the thing about the location that you won’t read in most reviews – yes, you’re close to all the harbor action, but you’re also in a spot where you can walk to some genuinely good local restaurants without fighting through crowds of tourists. There’s this Turkish place about two blocks away that stays open late and makes incredible döner, which became my go-to after long days of wandering around the Speicherstadt. The hotel itself doesn’t have a restaurant, just a breakfast room (the breakfast is pretty standard continental fare, nothing to write home about but it’ll fuel your day), but honestly that works in your favor because it forces you to explore the neighborhood. Parking can be a bit tricky – there’s street parking but it fills up fast, especially on weekends when people come down to the harbor. The 7.1 rating feels about right to me; it’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s well-run, fairly priced for Hamburg, and the location really can’t be beat if you want to experience the working waterfront side of the city rather than just the polished tourist version.

Reviews

  • John from United Kingdom – 7 May 2024 (8/10)

    Comfortable and clean good value.

  • Jamil from Denmark – 6 July 2023 (6/10)

The location and room for family is good.

What could be improved: The parking rule should be explicitly mentioned in booking.com there are some mixed messages.

  • Candler from United States – 3 May 2023 (8/10)

Private parking in a gated underground lot beneath the hotel (17€ for 24 hrs). Modern hotel room and design was cool. Location was perfect because it’s within approximately 1-2 mikes of multiple historical sites.

What could be improved: Check in was not a smooth process and took a while. The hotel was experiencing a building wide issue with the hotel room electronic locking mechanism so guest could not enter with the key card. Multiple guest had to wait a while to check-in because a single staff member had to visit each room one-by-one and unlock the door. Hotel was extremely busy and we waited 10+ minutes to take the elevator from the top floor with heavy luggage. The bar was closed but had a staff member manning it, odd.

  • Alfonso from Germany – 10 April 2023 (8/10)

The staff was exceptionally nice and everything was very clean

What could be improved: The location

  • Jakub from Poland – 11 March 2023 (8/10)

Great breakfast and very polite staff. The room wasn't anything fancy, but definitely met our expectations (very clean and bonus points for the hair drier attached!). Overall a nice stay.

What could be improved: We didn't like the lack of the balcony and one of our friends experienced some problems with the Wi-Fi, which isn't a big deal. However, the additional fee for cultural and turistical reasons (6 euro) did suprise us in a negative way.

  • Maria from Germany – 8 January 2023 (8/10)

    staff was super friendly

What could be improved: location wasnt the best, specially at night seemed a bit shady

  • Raghavendran from India – 3 May 2025 (7/10)

Breakfast was really good. It would have been better if they had more salads and other options for vegetarians. Yogurts were really good.

What could be improved: Nothing much

  • Kara from Australia – 3 May 2025 (7/10)

Small room but had everything I needed. Close to bus route. Good breakfast.

What could be improved: The room smelled of smoke with the window closed. Was often noisy outside from vehicles and people having loud conversations or on the phone.

  • Bo from Germany – 13 March 2025 (7/10)

Good value for the price and the food is okay.

What could be improved: The location was too far from public transportation, since I was new to Hamburg I didn't know that.

  • Gábor from Hungary – 5 August 2024 (7/10)

It was an extremely interesting experience to stay here. The accommodation itself wouldn't be bad as the room and bathroom were correct, same goes for the breakfast (with some comments).
The location is not too bad either: there is a bus service that runs frequently (you can also buy a ticket or day ticket online (hvv – ÖPNV Tickets & Fahrinfo), but you can walk into the city centre in about 60-80 minutes.
In the evening the place to have breakfast will be a restaurant, and it is not expensive and serves delicious food.

What could be improved: The difficulty and complexity of parking is shocking. I don't know what experience the staff may have, but they are very strict in listing the rules and not looking through the eyes of the guests.
Parking cannot be booked in advance, only once you are there. But then obviously there is not necessarily a space available. So I parked on the street the first night – irregularly, because although parking is free on the street in front of the accommodation, there is no free space. This is pretty much true of most of the surrounding streets, where you don't have to pay, there are almost always full houses. But after a certain distance, you don't really want to leave your car there…
After my first night parking on the street, the next morning I kept asking when there would be a free space, and when there finally was one, I took it – unfortunately, it doesn't work either, that they tell you when a parking space is available, you have to be at the reception and wait and wait. This is pretty bad and inconvenient.
Check in is pretty quick – if you are the only one there. If there's someone else, you have to wait a long time. You always have to hand in the key and wait through the check-in line, and the same thing when you want to pick up the key.
They could not charge my credit card (this was possible at every other places) and booking.com kept sending me notifications that my reservation might be cancelled. I ended up paying on the spot – as had been agreed beforehand…
Breakfast is fair, but sometimes they wait to refill the meat and cheese: the portion they put out at a time is enough for about three or four people… then you have to wait for a refill. There is a lady at breakfast who asks for the room number without any greeting and smile – we had the feeling she must have served somewhere in North Korea before, because she kept such an eye on everything (except the refill).
However, we got used to the accommodation over time 🙂
