Hotel Mare Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Mare on a quiet residential street in Hohenfelde, you might wonder if you’ve got the right address — and that’s actually part of its charm. This three-star property sits tucked away from the tourist crowds, but honestly, that’s exactly what makes it work so well. The building has that understated Hamburg elegance you don’t always find in the city center, and there’s something refreshing about checking into a place that feels more like a neighborhood gem than a cookie-cutter hotel.
The Hohenfelde Advantage
Here’s what I love about this location — you’re in Hamburg proper, but it doesn’t feel overwhelming. Hohenfelde is one of those districts that locals actually live in, which means you’ll find proper bakeries and corner cafés instead of just tourist traps. The Alster lake is literally a few minutes’ walk away, and I mean the good part where you can actually sit by the water without fighting for space. Couples seem to get this immediately (they rate the location 9.0, which honestly makes perfect sense), because there’s something romantic about having your own little corner of the city to explore.
Your Room and Comfort
The rooms here are what I’d call “thoughtfully simple” — nothing flashy, but everything you actually need is there and works properly. You know what I appreciate? The windows are big enough to let in real light, and the beds are comfortable without being overly fancy. There’s parking available right at the hotel, which anyone who’s tried to navigate Hamburg by car will tell you is worth its weight in gold. The whole place has this calm, residential vibe that makes it easy to unwind after a day of sightseeing.
Morning Fuel
The breakfast setup is a proper buffet — not one of those sad continental affairs with stale pastries. They actually put effort into it, with local touches that remind you you’re in northern Germany. I found myself lingering over coffee longer than usual, partly because the breakfast room has this relaxed atmosphere where you don’t feel rushed. It’s the kind of morning routine that sets you up well for exploring the city, whether you’re heading to the Speicherstadt or just wandering along the Alster.
Why Guests Love It
With an 8.3 rating and that impressive 9.1 location score, Hotel Mare clearly gets something right that bigger hotels often miss. It’s the combination of being genuinely well-located without the chaos, plus having staff who seem to actually care about your stay rather than just processing you through. The neighborhood gives you a real taste of Hamburg life — you’ll walk past locals heading to work, stumble upon that perfect little restaurant that’s not in any guidebook, and generally feel like you’re experiencing the city rather than just visiting it. For the price point of a three-star property, you’re getting an experience that feels much more personal and authentic than what you’d find in the touristy areas.
Travelers should reserve a hotel in Hamburg at least two months ahead of their visit to ensure availability and secure better rates, especially during the peak summer season when the city hosts numerous maritime festivals and outdoor concerts.

The receptionist waited for me after the normal check in time, which I really appreciate. The room is super clean. The area is central and close to great restaurants and the lake. 4 stops from the train station. Really convenient to go to the station.
What could be improved: The price is slightly higher than expected. But the location might play a big role in the price.Haim from Israel – 26 October 2022 (9/10)
What a gem!
Even though it’s separate from the main building, it’s a really nice place for a very fair price.
The crew, who are a family, we’re so nice and attentive!
Strongly recommended!Elaine from China – 17 August 2022 (8/10)
