Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Hotel Mare? It’s one of those places that doesn’t try too hard to impress you – and somehow that makes it more charming. I mean, it’s technically a 3-star property, but honestly, it punches way above its weight class. The lobby has this relaxed, lived-in feeling that immediately puts you at ease, like you’re staying at a well-traveled friend’s place rather than some corporate chain.

The thing about Mare is that it gets the fundamentals absolutely right. The rooms are clean and comfortable without being fancy – think crisp white linens, decent water pressure, and windows that actually open (you’d be surprised how rare that is these days). I stayed there during what locals call the shoulder season, and the staff genuinely seemed to care about making sure guests were settled in properly. Check-in was smooth, no weird upselling tactics, just straightforward hospitality. The Wi-Fi actually works throughout the building too, which – let’s be honest – is sometimes a gamble with smaller hotels.

What really won me over, though, were the little details that show someone’s paying attention. The coffee in the lobby is surprisingly good, and they keep it going until late morning for those of us who aren’t exactly early risers. There’s this small terrace area that most people seem to miss, tucked away on the second floor, where you can actually sit with a book or your laptop without feeling like you’re in everyone’s way. The neighborhood itself has that authentic feel – you’ll hear the sounds of daily life, maybe some street conversation in the evenings, but it’s never overwhelming. I actually found it kind of soothing after being in more touristy areas.

Now, I won’t pretend it’s perfect – the elevator is one of those European-style tiny ones that fits maybe two people and a small suitcase, so if you’re traveling with a lot of gear, you might be taking the stairs. And while the rooms are comfortable, don’t expect a lot of space to spread out. But here’s the thing: that 8.3 rating isn’t just numbers on a screen. It reflects what you actually experience – a place that delivers on its promises without any pretension. It’s the kind of hotel where you sleep well, start your day without stress, and don’t feel like you’re being nickel-and-dimed for basic services. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Travelers should reserve a hotel in Hamburg at least two months ahead of their visit to ensure availability and secure better rates, especially during the peak summer season when the city hosts numerous maritime festivals and outdoor concerts.

    What a gem!
Even though it’s separate from the main building, it’s a really nice place for a very fair price.
The crew, who are a family, we’re so nice and attentive!
    Strongly recommended!

  • Theis from Denmark – 16 August 2022 (7/10)

It was clean and well organised, well kept

  • Yan from Sweden – 23 April 2023 (8/10)

The receptionist waited for me after the normal check in time, which I really appreciate. The room is super clean. The area is central and close to great restaurants and the lake. 4 stops from the train station. Really convenient to go to the station.

What could be improved: The price is slightly higher than expected. But the location might play a big role in the price.

What could be improved: facade under renovation. noises
