You know what struck me first about Hotel und Landhaus ‘Kastanie’? The name actually makes sense once you’re there – there’s this massive chestnut tree (that’s what Kastanie means) right in the courtyard that honestly makes the whole place feel like you’ve stumbled onto someone’s country estate rather than just another hotel. I mean, it’s technically a 3-star property, but that 8.8 rating tells the real story here. Sometimes the star system just doesn’t capture what a place is actually like, and this is one of those times.

The landhaus part of the name isn’t just marketing fluff either – they’ve got this interesting setup where some rooms are in the main hotel building, but others are scattered around these charming little country house-style buildings. I stayed in one of the landhaus rooms and honestly preferred it to the main building. More space, this cozy farmhouse vibe, and way quieter if you’re trying to actually sleep (though to be fair, the whole property is pretty peaceful). The rooms themselves are what I’d call thoughtfully simple – nothing flashy, but everything you need is there and it’s all well-maintained. The kind of place where someone clearly cares about the details, like having proper blackout curtains and a shower with actual water pressure.

What really won me over though was how the staff just… gets it. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – no pushy upsells or complicated explanations about amenities you’ll never use. They seem to understand that most people staying here want a comfortable base without a lot of fuss, and they deliver on that perfectly. The breakfast situation is solid too, nothing revolutionary but fresh local stuff and strong coffee, which is really all you need. I actually ended up extending my stay an extra night, partly because I was enjoying the relaxed atmosphere but also because – and this might sound weird – I really liked sitting under that chestnut tree in the evenings. There’s something about the way the light filters through those leaves that just makes you want to slow down for a minute. If you’re looking for a spa resort or nightlife scene, this isn’t your spot. But if you want somewhere genuine and comfortable where you can actually unwind without breaking the bank, Kastanie gets it right.

  Great location near highway to Puttgarden ferry, beautiful surroundings and the most amazing dinner ever! The roast beef dish was to die for! And the ribs!

  What could be improved: The area for smokers is by the main entrance. Very unsuitable. Had to walk through smoke to enter the hotel.
