Hotel Wagner im Dammtorpalais Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Wagner im Dammtorpalais, you immediately notice this isn’t your typical three-star property. The historic Dammtorpalais building has this elegant facade that hints at Hamburg’s grand past — I mean, you’re literally staying in a piece of the city’s architectural history. The entrance feels refined without being intimidating, and honestly, the location hit me right away. You’re positioned perfectly between the bustling city center and the more residential Rothenbaum district, which gives you the best of both worlds.
The Rothenbaum Advantage
Here’s what locals know about this area — Rothenbaum is where Hamburg gets sophisticated without the tourist crowds. You’re a short walk from the Alster lakes (perfect for morning jogs, by the way), and the Dammtor train station is practically next door, making day trips or airport connections incredibly easy. What really struck me was how couples seem to gravitate toward this neighborhood — there’s something romantic about strolling through the tree-lined streets toward the water. The nearby Planten un Blomen park becomes your backyard, and you know what? That matters more than you’d think when you want to escape the hotel for a bit.
Rooms and Comfort
The rooms at Hotel Wagner im Dammtorpalais feel more upscale than the three-star rating suggests. Mine had this classic European hotel charm — not flashy, but thoughtfully designed with quality furnishings that actually looked like someone cared about the details. The windows are well-insulated (Hamburg can get noisy), and I appreciated that the room felt like a proper retreat after long days exploring the city. The bathrooms are compact but functional, and honestly, everything just works the way it should.
Breakfast and Practical Matters
The breakfast buffet here is solid — not groundbreaking, but it covers all the German classics plus enough variety to keep you satisfied. I found myself lingering over coffee longer than usual, probably because the breakfast room has this calm atmosphere that doesn’t rush you out the door. Parking is available on-site, which is actually a big deal in Hamburg where street parking can be a nightmare. It’s one of those practical touches that makes the whole experience smoother, especially if you’re planning to explore beyond the city limits.
Why Guests Love It
What keeps people coming back to this place is the combination of location and character — you’re getting authentic Hamburg without sacrificing comfort or convenience. The staff genuinely seems to know the neighborhood and can point you toward spots that aren’t in every guidebook. For couples especially, there’s something appealing about having such easy access to both the cultural attractions downtown and the quieter, more romantic corners of the city. It’s the kind of hotel that feels like a smart choice rather than a compromise, where the three-star price point gets you an experience that punches well above its weight class.

What could be improved: Just minor which is the wifi.Mayuran from Malaysia – 30 March 2025 (7/10)
location is convenient, quiet and scenic
What could be improved: the walls are thin, so you can hear if other guests are loudFanny from Switzerland – 1 February 2025 (8/10)
great staff, they made themselves available when I needed help with the light switch, cosy vibes in the room
What could be improved: Facilities a little oldLeon from United Kingdom – 10 December 2024 (9/10)
The room was small, but characterful & comfortable. It was a pity we only had one proper pillow each, but otherwise
the linens were vert comfortable. The location of the hotel is ideal for walking to the lake, to Stephanplatz or
Hallerstraße stations to easily access the whole of the city. Breakfast was really nice – lots to choose from & it was all
fresh and delicious.
What could be improved: We only had one pillow each – would have been preferable to have had two.Joern from Germany – 10 November 2024 (8/10)
Location close to Dammtor, facade is beautiful
What could be improved: Room very small and window into the small courtyard; bathroom very small. Breakfast overly expensive and compared to another hotel nearby, small and boring buffet.Steffan from United Kingdom – 10 November 2024 (9/10)
Lovely welcome, good rooms close together as we had requested. Safe and very convenient location. Great breakfast, if at a price! Walkable to the Alster, Planten un Blomen, nearby restaurants (Grindelhof), very good bus/U-Bahn/S-Bahn connections nearby.

Nice hotel, friendly receptionist. The room was simple but comfortable.
What could be improved: For the price, I would have liked a kettle and tea/coffee options included in the room.Morgan from United Kingdom – 24 September 2024 (9/10)
Booked to stay here for a convention in the CCH. The room was slightly smaller than I would've hoped, but was definitely enough room for myself and my roommate.
Distance from the CCH was good, the area around the hotel felt very safe, and it was mostly quiet throughout our stay. Good proximity to the train station and a couple shops, while being far enough away to hear neither. Almost everything you could need in a reasonable walking distance.
The staff spoke good English, and were extremely friendly.
Their "do not disturb" and "please clean room" signs were in German, but easy enough to understand with green and red colouring with check✔️ and cross❌ symbols
The rooms were cleaned by a cleaner once a day, and they were nice enough to fold my pajamas that I left on top of the bed by mistake.
What could be improved: My only real gripe with my stay was how far my room was from the entrance. The hotel is quite wide instead of tall, so some of the rooms are quite far from the entrance. There are side exits, but from what I could tell, no side entrances. So every night we had to walk through the majority of the hotel to get to our room.Jana from Switzerland – 24 August 2024 (9/10)
Clean, location green and not noisy
Heljä from Finland – 4 August 2024 (9/10)
Very good location and still nice quiet rooms. We had our own balcony and view over the trees from there. Easy access everywhere around the city and wonderful park nearby were the cherry on the top.
