First Impressions

Walking up to Hotel Wedina an der Alster, you immediately notice it’s not your typical Hamburg hotel — and I mean that in the best way. The four-star property sits quietly on Gurlittstraße in St. Georg, housed in what looks like a collection of charming townhouses that have been thoughtfully connected. There’s something almost residential about the whole setup, which honestly makes it feel more welcoming than those massive chain hotels you see everywhere. The entrance has this understated elegance that suggests the owners actually care about creating something special rather than just filling rooms.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s what I love about the location — you’re literally steps from the Alster, Hamburg’s gorgeous lake that locals treat like their backyard. St. Georg has this interesting mix of authentic Hamburg life and easy access to everything tourists want to see. You can walk to the Hauptbahnhof in about ten minutes (super handy if you’re arriving by train), but you’re also close enough to the Speicherstadt and HafenCity that you don’t need to plan your whole day around getting there. The neighborhood itself has great cafés and restaurants that aren’t tourist traps, plus there’s something nice about staying somewhere that feels like a real part of the city rather than a hotel district.

The Rooms

The rooms at Hotel Wedina an der Alster have character — and I don’t mean that in the polite way people say it when a place is quirky but uncomfortable. Each room feels individually designed rather than stamped out of the same corporate mold. The beds are genuinely excellent (guests consistently rave about getting great sleep here), and the bathrooms are modern without being sterile. What struck me most was the attention to small details — good lighting for actually reading, enough outlets where you need them, and windows that open properly so you can get fresh air from the Alster area.

Breakfast & Amenities

The breakfast buffet is one of those pleasant surprises that sets the tone for your whole day. It’s comprehensive without being overwhelming — fresh local breads, good coffee, and enough variety that you won’t get bored if you’re staying several days. They’ve also got private parking, which anyone who’s tried to park in Hamburg will appreciate. It’s not cheap, but it’s available, and sometimes that’s worth its weight in gold when you’re dealing with a busy European city center.

Why Guests Love It

What really makes this place work is how it balances being a proper hotel with feeling personal and local. Couples especially seem to connect with the romantic setting near the water — there’s something about being close to the Alster that just feels more special than staying in the commercial center. The staff knows the area well and can point you toward things you might not find on your own. You’re getting that boutique hotel experience without the boutique hotel attitude, if you know what I mean. It’s the kind of place where you actually look forward to coming back at the end of the day.

  Cute little boutique hotel by the Alster with a stunning garden and a nice breakfast selection. Location is a little far from the city center but we knew this going into it and preferred being in a quieter part of town. There were lots of nearby restaurants and cafes too which was nice. The room was really simple but had most of everything we needed. We reserved parking for the night and the staff so kindly allowed us to keep our car there well after our checkout.
  
  What could be improved: We couldn’t control the temperature in the room for some reason. It was a hot day and we had to open a window to prevent from sweating through the night.

  Very cozy and nice hotel in a wonderful location, 10 minutes from the central station. Also very close to Alster lake!
  The room was already for check-in 3 hours later without additional cost.
  Room was very comfortable and clean, fully equipped according to the description. Even tissues were there!
  For sure a nice place to stay in Hamburg!
  Additionally, very nice support at the reception desk, I asked for a change to the invoice and it was delivered very quickly!

  I stayed hear for three nights for a work trip. I found it cozy and comfortable, and loved the big window onto the garden. It was much nicer than staying in a soulless corporate hotel.
  
  What could be improved: There is no coffee or tea making equipment in the room. I like to have a cup of coffee in bed before facing the world, so this was not ideal.
