Hotel Description

You know what? The ibis Hamburg Alster Centrum really surprised me – and I mean that in the best way possible. When you first walk up to it, honestly, it looks like your typical mid-range chain hotel, nothing fancy. But here’s the thing about Hamburg that locals will tell you: location is everything, and this place gets it right. You’re literally a stone’s throw from the Alster lakes, which I actually didn’t realize until I stepped out for my morning coffee and boom – there’s that gorgeous waterfront right there.

The rooms are… well, they’re ibis rooms, so you know what you’re getting. Clean, efficient, those signature red accents everywhere. But what I really appreciated was how quiet it stays, even though you’re in the heart of the Alster area. I was expecting city noise all night, but honestly slept better than I have in months. The beds are surprisingly comfortable too – not luxury hotel amazing, but definitely not the firm-as-a-rock situation you sometimes get with budget chains. One tiny thing that bugged me though: the shower pressure could be better, but that’s pretty much my only real complaint.

What really won me over was stepping outside and realizing how perfectly positioned this place is. You can walk to the Binnenalster in maybe five minutes, and there’s this whole network of canals and bridges that makes Hamburg feel almost Venice-like (okay, maybe I’m being dramatic, but you get it). The hotel staff actually knows their stuff too – the guy at reception gave me directions to this little local spot for dinner that wasn’t in any of my guidebooks, and it ended up being one of those perfect Hamburg evenings sitting by the water. There’s a U-Bahn station super close by, so getting around the city is actually effortless. I mean, you could easily walk to the shopping areas or catch a boat tour from the Jungfernstieg without any hassle. For a 3-star place with a 7.5 rating, it delivers exactly what it promises – nothing flashy, but everything you need to explore Hamburg properly. Plus, and this matters if you’re traveling in summer, the area doesn’t get overrun with cruise ship crowds like some parts of the city do.

  A very warm and comfortable room. The hotel was very close to the main railway station and the centre of Hamburg.

  Quiet location near to the main station. The breakfast was extensive and exceeded my expectations. Friendly staff.

  Check-in was super fast (I already had used the online check-in option).
  Breakfast was a good standard and never ran out of anything, at least when I was attending mostly before 9:00 am.
  Staff was always friendly. Two sets of towels even when I booked the room for one.
  The mattress was good, I suffer from back pain and found the beds very comfortable.
  
  What could be improved: There was a low frequency hum in the room that I could not locate, but it was not annoying enough for me to bother reception with it.
  When I wanted to store my luggage on the departure day, they only offered lockers, which cost 2€ (not deposit, the locker kept the coin).

  Very good facilities, location near train station. Staff very helpful.
  
  What could be improved: I don't like that the listing did not tell you that when you check in, you must give them your birthdate to get your room. That would have been a deal breaker for me if I had known it when I booked. There is way too much data collection going on here. Birthdate is not necessary to recover damages customers may do. What good reason is there to demand it? They already have our credit card number, etc. IBIS: you owe it to us to tell us this BEFORE we book the stay!
