You know what struck me first about Kocks Hotel Garni? The name – I’ll be honest, it made me do a double-take when I was booking, but don’t let that throw you off. This is actually a solid little 3-star spot that punches above its weight in ways that matter when you’re actually staying somewhere, not just looking at glossy photos online.

The thing about Garni hotels (which just means they don’t do full restaurant service, in case you’re wondering) is they either nail the basics or they don’t – there’s nowhere to hide behind fancy dining rooms or elaborate lobbies. Kocks gets it right where it counts. The rooms are what I’d call “thoughtfully simple” – clean lines, decent beds that don’t leave you feeling like you wrestled with a pretzel all night, and honestly, the kind of setup where you can actually find the light switches without playing hide and seek in the dark. I mean, you’d be surprised how many places mess that up. The bathrooms are compact but functional, with that European efficiency thing going on where everything has its place and actually works.

What really won me over, though, was the breakfast situation. Now, I’m not talking about some elaborate buffet with ice sculptures – this is more like what a really good local café would serve, but included in your stay. Fresh bread that’s actually fresh (you can tell because it doesn’t bounce when you drop it), local cheeses and meats, and coffee that doesn’t taste like it was filtered through gym socks. The staff running breakfast – they’ve got this relaxed professionalism down pat. They remember if you’re the orange juice person or the coffee-first-questions-later type, which sounds small but honestly makes your morning so much smoother.

The whole place has this quietly efficient vibe that grows on you. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – no upselling, no complicated key card explanations, just “here’s your room, here’s how things work, let us know if you need anything.” That 7.9 rating makes total sense once you’re there for a day or two. It’s not trying to be something it’s not, but what it does, it does well. The location works for both business travelers and people just exploring – you’re not stuck in some tourist bubble, but you’re not stranded in the middle of nowhere either. Parking was easier than I expected, which is saying something these days.

Look, if you’re hunting for Instagram-worthy chandeliers or a rooftop pool, keep scrolling. But if you want a place that nails the fundamentals – good sleep, solid breakfast, helpful staff who don’t hover but are there when you need them – Kocks Hotel Garni delivers exactly what a good 3-star should. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need, especially when you’re spending your days out exploring rather than lounging around the hotel anyway.

  Great location for the airport and easy to reach from the tram system. The room was welcoming and comfortable and very quiet. There's a paid for shuttle bus to the airport on the half hour but you need to go next door to the Marriot hotel to get it (I wasn't told that so missed one but the airport is barely five minutes drive away.)
  
  What could be improved: The bedroom floor creaked every time you stepped on it – and you could hear it creaking from other rooms. That really needs sorting out as it was so irritating. No kettle in the room but staff will make you hot water on request.

  The staff was really helpful and friendly. Helped us with all our needs. It’s a little dated but the quaintness of the hotel makes up for it. Would definitely stay there again. Close enough to the airport if you wanted to walk or you can take a shuttle.
