Hotel Description
You know what, the Mercure Hamburg City really surprised me – and I mean that in the best way possible. I’ll be honest, when I first walked into the lobby, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like another standard business hotel, but there’s something genuinely welcoming about the place that grows on you pretty quickly. The staff actually seems to care about what they’re doing, which honestly isn’t always a given with chain hotels these days.
The location is where this place really shines, though they don’t exactly shout about it. You’re right in the thick of Hamburg’s city center, which means you can walk to pretty much everything worth seeing without dealing with the U-Bahn if you don’t want to. I spent most of my mornings just wandering around the nearby streets, grabbing coffee from the little places tucked between the shops – there’s this one spot about two blocks away that does incredible pastries, and the hotel reception actually knew exactly which one I meant when I asked for directions. The Alster lakes are close enough for an easy evening stroll, and if you’re into the whole maritime thing (which, let’s face it, is kind of Hamburg’s whole deal), the harbor area is totally walkable from here.
What I really appreciated was how the rooms felt… well, lived-in isn’t the right word, but comfortable in a way that didn’t feel corporate. The beds are solid – I’m pretty picky about mattresses and actually slept well, which doesn’t always happen when I travel. The bathrooms are nothing fancy but everything works properly, hot water comes fast, and there’s decent water pressure. Small things, I know, but they matter when you’re dealing with jet lag or just want a proper shower after walking around the city all day. The soundproofing is pretty good too – Hamburg can get lively at night, especially on weekends, but I never felt like I was sleeping in the middle of a party. The WiFi actually works throughout the building (shocking, I know) and the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a jet engine, which puts it ahead of half the places I’ve stayed in Europe. Look, it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury, but honestly? Sometimes you just want a place that does the basics really well without any drama, and that’s exactly what you get here. The 7.8 rating makes total sense – it’s the kind of solid, dependable spot that makes you think “yeah, I’d stay here again” without any major complaints or over-the-top raving.

Hotel located 20 mn walk from the center or 10 mn walk from the nearest S-Bahn (local train)Manuel from Austria – 18 August 2024 (9/10)
Breakfast times spaned from 06:30 (?) to 10:00, perfect for early birds and late riser, with a rich variety of food. The hotel is somewhat close-by to the S3/S5, also not far away from the central parts of the city.

Clean, comfy beds, great breakfast, nice bar and entrance relaxation space.
Room design nice.
What could be improved: Shower was strong but didn't point the right way so had to hold nozzle which is annoying when washing hair.
Quite a way from city so a bus/taxi ride necessary.Jodi from Australia – 28 November 2023 (9/10)
Room big and spacious. Bathroom and shower were very nice. Decor in reception was lovely. Breakfast each day was really good. About a 20 minute walk to the city centre. You are just enough outside of the city centre for it to be quiet but close enough to walk each day. I always enjoy any Mecure I go to around the world.
