Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard “Moderne Altbauwohnung,” I had no clue what to expect. The name sounds super formal, but this 3-star spot is actually one of those hidden gems that makes you feel like you stumbled onto something the guidebooks missed. With an 8.7 rating, there’s clearly something special happening here, and after spending time there, I totally get why.

The thing about this place is that it nails that sweet spot between old-world charm and actually functioning like a modern hotel. You know how some historic properties make you feel like you’re roughing it for the sake of “authenticity”? Not here. The building itself has that gorgeous European old-apartment vibe – I’m talking high ceilings, original hardwood floors that creak just enough to feel authentic but not annoying, and these massive windows that let in ridiculous amounts of natural light. But then you get inside and everything just… works. The Wi-Fi doesn’t drop every five minutes, the shower has actual water pressure, and honestly, the beds are way more comfortable than I expected from a 3-star place.

What really sold me was the attention to small details that nobody bothers with anymore. The staff – and I mean this – actually seem to care about whether you’re having a good time. Not in that over-the-top concierge way, but more like staying at a friend’s place where they want to make sure you know where to grab good coffee in the morning. Speaking of which, the neighborhood is pretty fantastic for just wandering around. You’re not stuck in some tourist bubble, but you’re also not so far out that getting anywhere becomes a project. I found myself walking to dinner most nights because there’s actually stuff worth checking out nearby. The whole area has this lived-in feel where you see locals doing their grocery shopping and kids playing in the courtyards.

One thing I’ll mention – and this isn’t really a complaint – is that the rooms vary quite a bit since it’s an actual converted apartment building. Mine had this quirky layout where the bathroom was down a little hallway, which felt very European apartment-living authentic. Some people might find that annoying, but I thought it added character. The noise level was surprisingly good too, considering we’re talking about a building that’s probably seen a century or two of tenants. I mean, you’ll hear some street sounds during the day, but nothing that kept me up at night. Oh, and if you’re driving, definitely ask about parking when you book – street parking in the area can be a bit of a treasure hunt, but they seemed to have some solutions worked out.

  Geschmackvoll eingerichtete Wohnung in ruhiger Wohngegend. Die Unterkunft ist sehr sauber. Die Wohnungsübergabe war bestens organisiert und die Kommunikation mit dem Vermieter war sehr angenehm. Bushaltestelle und Einkaufsmöglichkeiten sind in der Nähe.
  Wir kommen gerne wieder.

  Sauber und modern, eine schöne Wohnung für zwei. Schlüsselübergabe von Vermieter hat problemlos funktioniert. Das Haus ist sehr ruhig, überhaupt keine Lärmbelästigung.
  
  What could be improved: Wohnung ist leider im vierten Stock und es ist kein Aufzug im Haus. Bad schön doch sehr eng und nicht viel Platz.

  What could be improved: In der Annonce war kein Hinweis auf 4. Etage, ohne Lift, 72 Stufen!! Für ältere Personen sehr anstrengend. Sehr kleines und enges Badezimmer mit WC. Moderne Küche ohne Esstisch nur mit Arbeitsinsel. Sehr großer Fernseher aber schwierig zu bedienen.
