You know what struck me first about the Moxy Hamburg City? It’s actually fun – and I mean that in the best way possible. This isn’t your stuffy business hotel where everything’s beige and boring. The moment you walk into the lobby, there’s this energy that feels more like a really well-designed hostel that grew up and got its act together. The staff behind the check-in counter (which doubles as a bar, honestly genius) were cracking jokes and seemed genuinely happy to be there, which is rarer than it should be.

The location is pretty solid for exploring Hamburg – you’re close enough to the Speicherstadt that you can easily walk over to gawk at those red brick warehouses, and the whole HafenCity area is right there when you want to feel fancy. I spent most evenings just wandering around the canals because, well, Hamburg’s basically built on water and it’s gorgeous once you get away from the tourist crowds. The rooms themselves are compact but cleverly done – think IKEA showroom but with actual personality. The bed was surprisingly comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses), and they’ve got these funky murals on the walls that somehow don’t feel try-hard. My room faced the street, which meant some traffic noise in the morning, but nothing a pair of earplugs couldn’t handle.

What I really appreciated was how they’ve embraced the whole “we’re not pretending to be a luxury hotel” vibe without cutting corners where it matters. The shower had proper water pressure, the Wi-Fi actually worked throughout the building, and housekeeping kept everything spotless. The communal areas downstairs get pretty lively in the evenings – there’s usually a mix of business travelers and younger tourists hanging out, playing foosball or just chatting over drinks. It can get a bit loud if you’re trying to have a quiet conversation, but that’s sort of the point of the place. They’re clearly going for that social, meet-people-while-traveling atmosphere, and it works. I ended up having dinner recommendations from a couple from Berlin who were way better than anything I would’ve found on my own. For a 3-star place, it punches above its weight – you’re getting way more personality and thoughtful design than you’d expect for the price point. Just don’t come here expecting room service and marble bathrooms, because that’s missing the point entirely.
