So here’s the thing about Palais Esplanade Hamburg – it’s one of those places that actually lives up to its fancy name, which honestly surprised me a bit. You walk into this 4-star property and immediately get why they went with the adults-only concept. There’s this sophisticated, almost library-like quietness that you just don’t find in family hotels, you know? The lobby has this old-world Hamburg elegance without feeling stuffy, and I mean, after dealing with the usual chaos of Hauptbahnhof area hotels, this felt like stepping into a different city entirely.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to capture that classic Hamburg merchant house vibe – you can almost picture the old Hanseatic traders who probably walked these same streets centuries ago. The rooms have this interesting mix of traditional German hospitality and modern comfort that actually works. None of that generic hotel chain nonsense where every room looks identical. The beds are proper firm (which I appreciate after too many soft hotel mattresses that leave you feeling like you slept in quicksand), and honestly, the soundproofing is impressive. Hamburg can get pretty lively, especially during the warmer months when everyone’s out until all hours, but inside here? Dead quiet.

The staff genuinely seems to know Hamburg inside and out – not just the obvious tourist spots, but the kind of local recommendations that make a trip memorable. They pointed me toward this incredible fish market route I never would’ve found otherwise, and when I mentioned wanting authentic northern German food, they suggested places that weren’t even in my guidebook. That’s the kind of local knowledge you hope for but rarely get. The whole experience feels deliberately curated for people who want to experience Hamburg as more than just another city break. With an 8.6 rating, you’d expect it to be decent, but there’s something about the attention to detail here that goes beyond just meeting expectations. It’s the kind of place where you find yourself planning your next Hamburg visit before you’ve even checked out.

  The breakfast was good. The selection of food and the service was amazing. I did think it was a little expensive for a hotel buffet however.
  
  What could be improved: Expensive, and not included in the price of the room, even though the rooms were €500+ for two nights.

  The location was excellent, just a few steps from the Binnenalster and from one of the best Subway/bus stops. Very nice suite, very nicely furnished and spacious.
  
  What could be improved: Depending on whether you get a room at the front, and if the weather is warm enough that you'd want the windows open – the front-most room is on a busy street which is fairly noisy late in the evening/night.

  The staff was a complete mixed bag Cristian and Sophie were amazing, thank you and the others seemed a little grumpy. Cristian helped me with my car then started singing opera with the most incredible voice, complete highlight. He is amazing and so helpful 🙂
  
  What could be improved: Quite a few stairs and I needed a bottle opener which I think should be in the room for a 4 star hotel and no could help as only one bottle opener in the bar and restaurant

  Needed a hotel room that was clean and functional, the room size was large with a large bathroom which contained a bath with a rain shower, spa soaps, body scrubs, body creams and a vanity kit. There was plenty of wardrobe space, desk, other furniture and mini bar with coffee machine, bathrobes and slippers. The decor of the room was very traditional (which although I prefer super modern) the room was great and bed was very comfortable. This hotel is situated next to the main hotel building, so it give the feel of staying in an apartment rather than a hotel, very quiet.
  
  What could be improved: nothing as the hotel fit the purpose of what I needed. I did not use any of the other hotel facilities as I ate out due to the location being near the cafe's, restaurants and bars.
