Hotel Description

Okay, so Villa Viva has this name that’s honestly a bit of a mouthful – “ein Haus das Brunnen baut” translates to “a house that builds fountains,” which I mean, sets expectations for something pretty unique, right? And you know what, it actually delivers on that quirky promise. This isn’t your typical three-star place where you’re wondering if the rating system broke down somewhere along the way. The 8.6 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there for a day or two.

The whole fountain theme isn’t just marketing nonsense – there are actually these lovely water features scattered around the property that create this constant, gentle background sound. I was worried it might be annoying at night, but honestly? It’s the opposite of those hotels where you hear every conversation in the hallway. The water sounds sort of mask everything else, so you sleep better than expected. The rooms themselves have this interesting mix of modern comfort and what I’d call “artistic eccentricity” – think clean lines but with unexpected touches like handcrafted tiles or these gorgeous basin sinks that look like they were carved from stone. Some of the bathroom fixtures are definitely Instagram-worthy, though I’ll warn you that the shower pressure varies depending on which floor you’re on (third floor was perfect, second floor was a bit weak).

What really got me was how the staff genuinely seems to care about the place – not in that overly rehearsed way, but like they’re actually proud to work there. Check-in was smooth, and the front desk person knew exactly which rooms had the best views without having to look it up. The breakfast isn’t elaborate, but everything tastes fresh and there’s always something local that changes based on the season. Parking can be a bit tricky since they only have a few spots, but they’ll help you find street parking that’s safe – and honestly, in this area, that local knowledge is worth its weight in gold. The location itself is one of those spots where you’re close enough to walk to the main attractions but far enough away that you’re not dealing with tourist crowds right outside your window. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if you’re looking for something with personality that doesn’t cost a fortune but still feels special.

Many travelers prefer to book apartments in Hamburg through local agencies that offer personalized recommendations and insider knowledge about the best neighborhoods for exploring the city’s rich maritime heritage.

Interesting hotel with plants being trained to make a green wall.
    We loved the Roofdrop bar.

  • Paul from Australia – 5 May 2025 (8/10)

Well located near the train station. Small though comfortable.

  • Miriam from United Kingdom – 5 May 2025 (9/10)

Well thought out with comfy beds and very good breakfast. Perfect for one night stay
    Staff super helpful and friendly

  • Kathrine from United Kingdom – 4 May 2025 (8/10)

The sustainable ethos. Breakfast buffet had a good bread selection. Staff were helpful.

What could be improved: It would have been nice if the downstairs bar was open on a weekend for people who want a quiet drink. The rooftop bar was loud, crowded and aimed at a younger audience.

  • Maldon from United Kingdom – 30 April 2025 (9/10)

Breakfast was fantastic – lovely and fresh. Rooms are exceptionally clean – staff amazing friendly and kind
Location is an 8 minute walk from the main railway station

What could be improved: My first room was very hot at night but was moved to a cooler room. I was surprised no tv in the room
The area around does have a lot of homeless but I didn’t feel unsafe

  • Johanna from Germany – 18 April 2025 (8/10)

Very nice bar / rooftop, nice downstairs area with a Restaurant.

What could be improved: We booked it primarily bc of the rooftop sauna. Upon arrival we learn it’s closed. It disappointed us that that was communicated nowhere
