You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Alterwanderweg Haus – I mean, the name literally translates to “old hiking trail house,” which sounds pretty basic, right? But honestly, that 9.3 rating isn’t some fluke. This place gets the fundamentals so right that you sort of forget it’s technically just a 3-star spot.

The thing that strikes you immediately is how quiet it is, even though you’re not exactly in the middle of nowhere. The building itself has this solid, no-nonsense Alpine feel – thick walls that actually keep sound out (thank god, because I’m a light sleeper), and windows that frame the surrounding hills perfectly. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – none of that overly formal hotel dance, just friendly people who clearly know the area inside and out. They’ll tell you which hiking trails are worth your time and which ones are tourist traps, plus they have this casual way of mentioning the best times to hit the local spots before crowds show up.

What really won me over, though, was the attention to details that actually matter when you’re traveling. The beds are properly comfortable – not those rock-hard European mattresses that leave you wondering if you’ve offended someone. The rooms stay cool naturally, which is clutch during summer months when other places become ovens. And here’s something you don’t usually think about until it matters: the water pressure is fantastic, and hot water doesn’t run out even if you’re the last person to shower after a long day on the trails. Parking is straightforward and free, which honestly feels like a minor miracle these days. The breakfast setup is simple but done well – local bread that’s actually fresh, good coffee, and they don’t try to overcomplicate things with fancy stuff that doesn’t taste as good as the basics done right. I mean, there are fancier places in the region, sure, but this is the kind of spot where you sleep well, eat well, and wake up genuinely excited about exploring rather than stressed about checking boxes on some luxury amenity list. It’s the difference between staying somewhere and actually feeling at home somewhere, if that makes sense.

  The location is just above and beyond.
  Sauber, well equipped and lovely Appartement!
  The Terrasse is super!
  Parking is just in front of the door.
  30 minutes to Hamburg’s center by S- bahn.

  Es war super, tolle Lage, sehr sauber und alles da was man braucht.

  Es hat alles rundherum gepasst. Die Wohnung haben wir sehr sauber vorgefunden und ist sehr komfortabel eingerichtet. Wir hatten alles, was wir gebraucht haben. Die Lage war perfekt, um von dort aus Hamburg zu erkunden. Wir sind immer zum P+R nach Poppenbüttel gefahren (5min entfernt und kostet 2€ den ganzen Tag). Von dort aus ist man in 30 bis 40min in der Innenstadt. Nach dem Ausflug genießt man dann die ruhige Umgebung der Unterkunft.

  Es handelt sich um eine neu eingerichtete und sehr schöne Wohnung. Die Lage ist auch sehr gut, ruhig im Grünen gelegen, aber doch ist man schnell in Hamburg und an der Alster.

  Eine außergewöhnlich tolle Wohnung. Sehr ruhig gelegen. Freundlicher Empfang. 5 Minuten fußläufig bis zur Bushaltestelle, dann mit der Linie 276 zur S-Bahn und von da aus nochmal 40 Minuten bis zu den Landungsbrücken.
