Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about August The Boardinghouse? The name actually makes sense once you’re there. It’s got this old-school charm that feels more like staying at a really well-run guesthouse than some sterile hotel chain – but with all the good stuff you’d want from a proper 4-star place. The whole vibe is sort of like if your design-savvy friend inherited a beautiful old building and decided to turn it into the kind of place they’d actually want to stay.

I mean, that 9.3 rating isn’t just lucky – they’re clearly doing something right with the details that matter. The rooms have this lived-in elegance that’s hard to fake, with actual character instead of that cookie-cutter hotel look. You’ll find proper reading lights (honestly, why is this so rare?), and the beds are the kind where you actually sleep well instead of just… existing until morning. The staff genuinely seems to know what they’re doing too, which makes check-in smooth and any little requests feel effortless rather than like you’re bothering someone.

What really gets me is how they’ve managed to nail that sweet spot between feeling authentic and being genuinely comfortable. The common areas have this relaxed energy where you might actually want to hang out with a coffee or a drink, and there’s usually a good mix of travelers who seem to have stumbled onto something special rather than just picked the first result on a booking site. It’s the kind of place where you end up staying an extra day because leaving feels premature – and honestly, in a world full of places that feel designed by committee, finding somewhere with actual personality is worth celebrating. The boardinghouse concept works because it feels intentional, like they set out to create a space that honors both comfort and character, and somehow pulled it off without trying too hard.

To book a hotel in Hamburg during the famous Hamburg DOM festival season, visitors should make reservations well in advance as the city attracts maritime enthusiasts and culture lovers from around the world.

Reviews

  • Jenny from United States – 6 May 2025 (10/10)

This place! For such a hopping neighborhood, the quiet courtyard with grassy outdoor seating is an oasis of calm. Every detail in the apartments is tasteful and functional. The high ceilings add to the feeling of airy space. We've already booked to return.

  • Ros from United Kingdom – 5 May 2025 (8/10)

    Everything

What could be improved: Street entrance dirty, bins, didn’t feel safe. Better lighting would help.

  • Louis from United Kingdom – 20 March 2025 (10/10)

    Immaculate. Beautiful quality. Super peaceful.

What could be improved: Can’t fault.

  • Mary from United States – 10 January 2025 (10/10)

Super location, comfy and spacious room, great amenities.

What could be improved: Not much! Maybe the coffee?

  • Amalie from Denmark – 1 December 2024 (10/10)

Really nice apartment and a great location.

  • Francis from United Kingdom – 18 November 2024 (10/10)

Excellent facilities. Apartment was immaculately clean and tidy. Quiet location some way away from street. Reasonably central location. Groceries available nearby. Uber availability was prompt. Staff very helpful. Laundry room in basement.

What could be improved: The shower pressure was not as high as we like. The local area is rather marred by ugly graffiti which is not attractive, but that is not the apartment's responsibility of course.

  • Esben from Denmark – 18 November 2024 (10/10)

Loved everything about it. The people, the place, the location. Everyone has been so friendly! The building sits in a quiet, cozy and stylish yard, in the middle of such a charming part of the city. Definitely coming back.

  • Martin from Canada – 16 November 2024 (9/10)

Good location close to lots of restaurants.

What could be improved: It was a little noisy at times, but nothing that bothered us too much.
