August The Boardinghouse Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to August The Boardinghouse on Schulterblatt, you immediately get the sense this isn’t your typical hotel. The building has this understated elegance that fits perfectly with the Sternschanze vibe — it’s polished but not pretentious, you know? I mean, this is one of Hamburg’s coolest neighborhoods, where the creative crowd hangs out, and August feels like it belongs here. The entrance is sleek without being intimidating, and honestly, that sets the tone for everything else.
The Sternschanze Experience
Here’s what I love about staying in Sternschanze — you’re right in the thick of things but not overwhelmed by tourist crowds. August sits on Schulterblatt, which is basically the main artery of the neighborhood, lined with independent cafes, record shops, and some seriously good restaurants. You can walk to the Reeperbahn in about ten minutes if you want the full Hamburg nightlife experience, but honestly, there’s plenty happening right outside your door. The area has this authentic Hamburg energy that you just don’t get in the more touristy parts of the city.
The Room
This four-star place really delivers on comfort — and I’m someone who’s pretty picky about where I sleep. The beds here are genuinely exceptional (apparently other guests agree, because they consistently rate them highly), and the room design strikes this perfect balance between modern and cozy. Everything feels thoughtfully chosen rather than just ordered from a hotel catalog. The spaces are generous too, which is refreshing when you’re used to cramped European hotel rooms. You’ll actually want to spend time here beyond just sleeping.
Practical Perks
What really impressed me was how they’ve thought through the little things that matter. There’s parking available, which — trust me — is a huge deal in this part of Hamburg where street parking can be a nightmare. The whole setup feels more like a well-designed apartment building than a traditional hotel, which makes sense given the “boardinghouse” concept. You get hotel services but with more space and a residential feel that’s particularly nice if you’re staying for more than just a night or two.
Why Guests Love It
The location consistently gets rave reviews, especially from couples who seem to really appreciate having such an authentic Hamburg neighborhood as their base. I can see why — there’s something romantic about wandering these streets in the evening, ducking into a wine bar or grabbing late-night snacks from one of the Turkish places that stay open late. You’re close enough to all the major sights but far enough from the cruise ship crowds to feel like you’re experiencing the real Hamburg. It’s that sweet spot where you feel like a temporary local rather than just another tourist passing through.
To book a hotel in Hamburg during the famous Hamburg DOM festival season, visitors should make reservations well in advance as the city attracts maritime enthusiasts and culture lovers from around the world.

This place! For such a hopping neighborhood, the quiet courtyard with grassy outdoor seating is an oasis of calm. Every detail in the apartments is tasteful and functional. The high ceilings add to the feeling of airy space. We've already booked to return.

Excellent facilities. Apartment was immaculately clean and tidy. Quiet location some way away from street. Reasonably central location. Groceries available nearby. Uber availability was prompt. Staff very helpful. Laundry room in basement.
What could be improved: The shower pressure was not as high as we like. The local area is rather marred by ugly graffiti which is not attractive, but that is not the apartment's responsibility of course.Esben from Denmark – 18 November 2024 (10/10)
Loved everything about it. The people, the place, the location. Everyone has been so friendly! The building sits in a quiet, cozy and stylish yard, in the middle of such a charming part of the city. Definitely coming back.
