Aussen Alster Hotel Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Aussen Alster Hotel on Schmilinskystraße, you immediately get that “this feels right” sensation — it’s one of those four-star places that doesn’t try too hard but gets everything just right. The building has this understated Hamburg elegance, and honestly, the location hit me before I even stepped inside. You’re in St. Georg, which I’ll admit took me by surprise with how perfectly positioned it is for exploring the city. The staff greeted me with that genuine German efficiency that somehow feels warm rather than cold, and I could tell right away this wasn’t going to be your typical chain hotel experience.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about St. Georg — it’s got this authentic Hamburg vibe without feeling touristy, and the Aussen Alster Hotel sits right in the sweet spot of it all. You’re literally minutes from the Alster lakes (hence the name, which makes perfect sense once you’re there), and the main train station is close enough that you don’t stress about connections but far enough that you’re not hearing announcements all night. The neighborhood has these great little cafes and shops that locals actually use, not just tourist traps. I mean, couples rate this location 9.2 out of 10, and after spending time here, I totally get why — there’s something romantic about being near the water with easy access to Hamburg’s heart.
The Room Experience
My room was exactly what you want from an upscale German hotel — clean lines, quality furnishings, and everything actually works properly. The beds are seriously comfortable (I’m picky about this), and the bathrooms have that satisfying European attention to detail where even the towels feel substantial. What struck me was how quiet everything was, considering you’re in the middle of Hamburg. The windows do their job, and you get decent natural light without feeling like you’re in a fishbowl. It’s not flashy, but it’s refined in that way that makes you feel like you made a smart choice.
Breakfast & Dining
Okay, so the breakfast situation here is actually impressive — they’ve got this buffet setup that covers pretty much every dietary need you can think of. Continental classics, vegetarian options, vegan choices, even gluten-free stuff that doesn’t taste like cardboard. I watched them prepare breakfast-to-go bags for early travelers, which is such a thoughtful touch. The food quality throughout the hotel really stands out — guests consistently rave about the meals, and after trying both breakfast and dinner, I understand the hype. It’s not just hotel food; it’s actually good food that happens to be in a hotel.
Why Guests Love It
There’s something to be said for a place that just works without drama, and that’s exactly what Aussen Alster Hotel delivers. Recent guests rate the location 9.1 out of 10, which tells you everything about how well-positioned this place is for actually experiencing Hamburg rather than just sleeping in it. The private parking is a genuine bonus if you’re driving (not always easy to find in German city centers), and the staff seems to genuinely care about making your stay smooth. It’s the kind of hotel where you’re not constantly thinking about the hotel itself — you’re thinking about Hamburg, which is exactly how it should be.
Hamburg hotels range from charming boutique properties in the historic Speicherstadt warehouse district to elegant harbor-view hotels and modern accommodations near the Elbe River.

Really cozy boutique hotel with a fantastic location close to everything you’ll need. Restaurants, bars, the lake and public transport just around the corner and with a short walk to the central station.
What could be improved: The only thing I thought was disappointing was the quality of the pillows and duvets. They didn’t match the rest of the hotel quality and comfort. Beds was good though.Marc from Belgium – 9 January 2025 (9/10)
The Hotel is very close to the Alster and very easy reachable for Public Transport.
On the Lange Reihe street, again very close by there is a very good supermarket and lots of restarants.
