You know what caught me off guard about B&B Hotel Hamburg-Altona? It’s actually got this understated charm that grows on you. I mean, when you first walk in, it’s pretty no-nonsense – clean lines, modern lobby, nothing too fancy – but honestly, that’s kind of refreshing after staying at places that try way too hard with their marble everything and gold accents.

The location is really what makes this place work. You’re right in Altona, which I have to say is one of those Hamburg neighborhoods that feels more like where people actually live rather than just where tourists wander around taking photos. There’s this great bakery literally two minutes away where locals grab their morning coffee (and trust me, you’ll want to – the hotel breakfast is decent but nothing special). The whole area has this working-class vibe that’s gotten a bit hipster-trendy in recent years, but not in an obnoxious way. You can walk to the Elbe riverfront pretty easily, and the fish market on Sunday mornings is absolutely worth the early wake-up call if you’re into that sort of organized chaos.

What I really appreciated was how quiet the rooms stay despite being on fairly busy streets – whoever designed this place actually thought about sound insulation, which you’d be surprised how often hotels completely whiff on. The rooms themselves are… well, they’re exactly what you’d expect from a solid 3-star spot. Nothing Instagram-worthy, but everything works, the beds are comfortable enough, and there’s plenty of space to actually unpack your stuff (small thing, but it matters when you’re staying more than one night). The shower pressure is surprisingly good, and they’ve got these blackout curtains that actually black out, which saved my life since I was dealing with some serious jet lag. One tiny complaint – the air conditioning can be a bit temperamental, but opening the windows usually does the trick unless it’s peak summer. Check-in was smooth, staff spoke good English, and they’re pretty helpful with local recommendations if you ask. The 7.9 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it delivers on what it promises without any nasty surprises. For the price point in Hamburg, which can honestly get pretty steep, this place offers solid value especially if you’re planning to spend most of your time exploring the city rather than lounging around the hotel.

  Friendly staff, good location, nice breakfast, comfortable room
  
  What could be improved: Tried to book parking. Was told reservations are only possible on the date of arrival. Called early morning, only to learn all parking lots are already booked.

  Clean, good value for money for Hamburg although it was slightly out of the city centre.
  
  Just over a 5 minute walk to the S bahn.
  
  What could be improved: When I arrived in the evening there was a smell of stale cigarette smoke in the bathroom which steadily got worse during the night and the following morning, even with running the extractor fan running I couldn't get rid of it.
  
  I've noticed this before in other B & B hotels and I suspect the problem is something to do with the ventilation system for the toilet pulling in air from other rooms.
  
  Not good for a non smoker like myself.

  Great location, easy to find. The reception was stuffed 24/7 which was really nice to see.
  
  What could be improved: The only thing that wasn't perfect was that the soap in my bathroom was empty so I had to use the other bottle.

  Breakfast was good, WIFI Ok, clean hotel, big bathroom and looks fresh & newly refurbished.
  Good underground parking, per car reserved parking number, but limited parking places. Lucky, we got one without any earlier reservation.
  
  What could be improved: Parking is tricky. To access the garage, you need to take from reception a special parking card which must be returned on departure (after taking out the car from garage).

  Room was clean, location is good with connections and had a decent breakfast.
  
  What could be improved: Parking was not very convenient. There are limited spots in front of the Hotel and the parking on the by roads were free. However, if you retrun to the hotel late finding parking is difficult.

  The staff is extremely helpful, welcoming and understanding. They addressed our requests immediately (we were in Hamburg for the marathon and had particular requests). Tobias Schindler in particular was extremely nice and accommodating, we couldn’t thank him enough.
  We would definitely stay again in this hotel.
