Honestly, when I first pulled up to Das Nest Boardinghouse in Niendorf, I wasn’t expecting much – I mean, it’s a 3-star place in what’s basically Hamburg’s suburban northwest corner. But you know what? Sometimes the unassuming spots surprise you the most. The building has this modern, clean-lined look that doesn’t try too hard, and there’s something refreshing about being away from all the tourist chaos in the city center.

What really won me over was how the place actually functions like a proper boardinghouse should. The rooms have these little kitchenettes that aren’t just for show – you can actually cook a decent meal, which is clutch when you’re staying for more than a couple nights. The staff genuinely seems to get that people are using this as a temporary home base, not just crashing for a night between sightseeing marathons. I watched them help this one guest figure out the best grocery stores nearby (there’s an EDEKA just a few minutes’ walk that’s surprisingly well-stocked), and they had actual useful advice about getting into the city center via the S-Bahn. Speaking of transportation – the Niendorf Nord station is close enough that you don’t need to stress about connections, but far enough that you’re not dealing with train noise at night.

The area itself is one of those Hamburg neighborhoods that locals know but tourists usually skip, which worked perfectly for me. It’s residential and quiet, with tree-lined streets that make evening walks actually pleasant instead of just something you do to kill time. There’s this little Turkish place around the corner that does incredible döner – the kind of spot you’d never find if you stuck to the tourist areas around the Speicherstadt. The hotel sits in this sweet spot where you can get to the beaches at Blankenese in about twenty minutes if you want that Elbe river vibe, but you’re also connected enough to pop into the city when you need that urban energy. I’ll be honest, the rooms aren’t going to blow your mind with luxury – but they’re thoughtfully designed with good lighting and enough space that you don’t feel cramped. That 8.3 rating makes total sense when you consider what you’re actually getting versus what you’re paying. It’s the kind of place where everything just works without any fuss, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

  Excellent location. Very quiet. Beside underground train station. Beside Airport bus stop. Modern and very clean. Nice sunny balcony.

  Soap/shampoo was a bit sparse.
  Communication with the host wasn’t great. We had to do all the chasing regarding arrangements to gain access. The number provided in their initial “welcome” message didn’t answer. They didn’t acknowledge any correspondence via the Booking.com portal. They sent one message asking for the deposit via PayPal and didn’t acknowledge receipt and didn’t reply when we advised of a plane delay and sought alternative check-in arrangements.
  Cash only seemed a bit dodgy too.

  We stayed in Flat 11 (of 12), on the top floor. It was a spacious studio flat with separate bathroom & hallway. Very clean, well appointed with plenty of storage space and enough cookware to prepare basic meals. Less than 5 minutes walk to the U-Bahn and with a local 'express' supermarket too by the station. We arrived late (22:30) but this was not a problem, the keys had been left in a safe outside with instructions sent by SMS earlier that day. Despite the negative comments below, we'd difinately stay again!
  
  What could be improved: Communication was lacking. This is a bit disconcerting when a EUR100 deposit is requested by PayPal and then the balance in cash on arrival. Das Nest does not accept card payments! It did feel like a scam but many other guests also reported the same with their reviews appearing genuine, not faked or 'bot' written.
