Hotel Commodore Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Hotel Commodore on Budapester Strasse, you immediately get the sense this three-star property knows exactly what it’s doing. The building has that solid, unpretentious Hamburg character — nothing flashy, but there’s a confidence in how it presents itself. I mean, when you’re sitting in St. Pauli with a 9.1 location rating, you don’t need to oversell anything. The lobby feels welcoming without trying too hard, and honestly, the staff seem genuinely pleased to see you rather than just going through the motions.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s the thing about this spot in St. Pauli — it’s perfectly positioned between Hamburg’s grittier entertainment district and the more refined areas near the city center. You’re close enough to the Reeperbahn that you can easily explore Hamburg’s famous nightlife, but far enough that you actually get some sleep. Couples absolutely love it here (they’ve rated the location 9.3), and I can see why. You can walk to the harbor, catch the U-Bahn without any hassle, and there are plenty of authentic local restaurants within a few blocks that tourists staying in the city center never discover.

The Room Experience

The rooms at Hotel Commodore are what I’d call refreshingly straightforward — clean, comfortable, and designed by people who actually travel themselves. You won’t find unnecessary frills, but everything you need is there and works properly. The beds are genuinely comfortable (not just hotel-marketing comfortable), and the bathrooms are well-maintained with decent water pressure. What I appreciated most was the attention to practical details — good lighting for reading, enough outlets in useful places, and windows that actually open if you prefer fresh air to constant air conditioning.

Breakfast & Amenities

The buffet breakfast here is solid without being spectacular, which honestly suits the hotel’s no-nonsense approach perfectly. You’ll find fresh bread, local cold cuts, decent coffee, and the usual continental options — nothing that’ll change your life, but it sets you up properly for a day of exploring Hamburg. The fact that they have parking available is actually a bigger deal than it might sound, especially in this part of the city where finding a spot can be a real headache. It’s one of those practical touches that shows they understand what travelers actually need.

Why Guests Love It

What keeps people coming back to Hotel Commodore isn’t any single standout feature — it’s the combination of getting the fundamentals right in a genuinely great location. You’re paying three-star prices but getting the kind of thoughtful service and local access that often costs much more elsewhere in Hamburg. The 7.7 rating reflects exactly what this place is: a reliable, well-run hotel that delivers on its promises without any pretense. If you want to experience Hamburg like someone who actually lives here rather than just passing through, this is your base camp.

Hamburg’s hotels wrap guests in maritime art, harbor panoramas, and concierge-led Speicherstadt photo walks.

Reviews of Hotel Commodore

  • ภาศิริพรรณ from Thailand – 11 April 2025 (8/10)

    very nice staff.

  • Hendrika from Netherlands – 7 April 2025 (9/10)

We arrived an hour before check in, no problem: in ten minutes we got the key to our room. Breakfast was very good.

  • Jeremy from United Kingdom – 1 January 2025 (8/10)

The location was great, the staff were helpful and friendly, breakfast was good and it's a really nice building.

What could be improved: The showers are either really hot or really cold. Usable but not great, there was no coffee in the room although there's an espresso machine in the breakfast area.

  • Elisa from United Kingdom – 15 September 2024 (7/10)

Very good location near the main road of Sankt Pauli and just off the stadium

What could be improved: The toilet was a bit too small

  • Matt from United Kingdom – 13 September 2024 (9/10)

It was clean and in a good location to Messe. Upon arrival, it was easy to check-in. I asked for an Iron and ironing board at reception, which was made available.

What could be improved: When booking, there were comments about the breakfast being good. However, it was unclear that breakfast was at an additional cost of 19.50 EUR (per person, per day). All options available when booking had no option for breakfast, which made you assume it was included in the initial price, which was already quite high. There was no information about the breakfast and cost at the time of booking or in email correspondence. It was only at reception the cost of breakfast was made known. Would I have booked somewhere else if I had known about the breakfast? Absolutely. There are lots of potential alternatives and the transport system is good.

  • Cassandra from Canada – 21 August 2024 (7/10)

The rooms were spacious! Very cozy with two beds and a couch. Honestly, great location to city center while we were in town for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour.

What could be improved: The lobby felt slightly dated but it really wasn't that bad.

  • Aidan from Ireland – 4 June 2024 (8/10)

    Room was good, .

What could be improved: Pillows very flat

    The bed quality

What could be improved: No air conditioning in the rooms

  • Clifford from United Kingdom – 30 April 2024 (9/10)

lovely bed and a excellent breakfast, namely the crispy bacon.

What could be improved: shower step, caught me out once.

  • Flauder from Austria – 18 January 2024 (9/10)

    Far better than assumed!
