Hotel Description

You know what really surprised me about Hotel Hafen Hamburg? It’s actually got this whole maritime thing going on that doesn’t feel forced or cheesy – and I mean, considering it’s literally called “harbor hotel,” that could’ve gone really wrong. The moment you walk in, there’s this subtle nautical vibe with dark wood and brass fixtures that feels authentic, like they actually thought about Hamburg’s shipping history instead of just slapping some anchors on the walls and calling it themed.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to feel like you’re experiencing the real Hamburg rather than just tourist Hamburg. You’re right there where the Elbe meets the city, and I spent way too much time just watching the container ships drift by from my room window. The St. Pauli area gets a bit of a reputation – yeah, it’s where the Reeperbahn is – but honestly, during the day it’s just this fascinating mix of old Hamburg charm and working port energy. You can walk to the fish market in about ten minutes (go early on Sunday mornings, trust me), and the whole Speicherstadt warehouse district is close enough that you don’t need to deal with Hamburg’s public transport unless you want to.

What really sold me on this place was the staff actually knowing their stuff about the neighborhood. The guy at reception didn’t just hand me a generic tourist map – he marked up specific spots based on what I mentioned I was interested in, including this little café on Bernhard-Nocht-Straße that I never would’ve found otherwise. The rooms are solid for a 4-star, nothing groundbreaking but comfortable with good soundproofing (which matters more than you’d think in this area, especially on weekends). I mean, the décor is a bit safe – sort of upscale business hotel meets maritime museum – but everything works properly and the beds are actually good. The shower pressure was fantastic, which honestly makes or breaks a hotel stay for me. One small thing though – if you’re driving, ask about parking when you book because street parking around there can be… well, let’s just say it’s Hamburg, not exactly known for abundant parking spots. The hotel can sort something out, but it’s easier if they know you’re coming with a car.

Excellent location, great views. Good service.

What could be improved: Beds too firm

  • Sean from United Kingdom – 6 April 2025 (8/10)

Location, excellent room with view over Elbe, bar

What could be improved: Coffee and tea making facilities would be a bonus as in most good hotels

What could be improved: Breakfast wonderful but somewhat expensive

  • Hendrikus from Denmark – 1 January 2025 (9/10)

Nice room in the Tower next to the main building.

I had dinner in the restaurant and it has been a long time since I had such excellent service. Attentive without being overbearing and super knowledgeable about the dishes and wines.

Breakfast was also good but I am a light eater in the morning so I am probably not the best to judge this.

What could be improved: Unfortunately the on-site parking was full, but they helped me with information on the street side parking rules

  • Svetlana from Netherlands – 23 December 2024 (9/10)

Very nice restaurant with a tasty food, tower bar has a beautiful view. Interior of the main building is just amazing. Super friendly staff. We enjoyed our stay!

What could be improved: Can't say anything here

  • Mark from United Kingdom – 7 December 2024 (9/10)

Beautiful setting above the Landensbrucke in St Pauli, overlooking the river Elbe, warm comfortable and very cosy beds great views from room windows. Breakfast very nice with lots of choice. Very pleasant bar just off reception, ideal for a nightcap before bed. Literally five stops on the 'U bahn' to the Main station and city center.

What could be improved: Not much at all, no real concerns or problems.

  • Carl from United States – 21 November 2024 (9/10)

Nice location, close to the water and lots of shopping and restaurants. Staff was nice and helpful. Also a quiet location.

What could be improved: Room was a little plain. Clean, but nothing extra special

  • Sushant from India – 23 September 2024 (8/10)

Grand old hotel, very beautiful and well preserved. Beautiful bar and common areas.
Great location if you’re planning to visit the harbor, city centre and night life.

What could be improved: It’s good to know the rooms are very small, even by general big city standards. We booked a double room and it really wasn’t even a room for one in terms of space. The lieutenant rooms are not for two and I don’t think the hotel should sell them for two.

  • Michael from Germany – 24 August 2024 (8/10)

    Amazing location
