You know what? Hotel Hafentor surprised me in the best possible way. I’ll be honest – when I first saw it was a 3-star place, I wasn’t expecting much, but sometimes those assumptions just get tossed right out the window. The moment you walk in, there’s this understated elegance that feels authentic rather than trying too hard. The lobby has this warm, maritime vibe that actually makes sense given the name (Hafentor means “harbor gate” for those wondering), and you can tell they’ve put thought into the details without going overboard.

What really got me was how genuinely comfortable everything felt. The rooms aren’t huge – I mean, this isn’t some sprawling resort – but they’re thoughtfully designed with these little touches that show someone actually cares. The beds are properly firm (thank goodness), and the bathrooms have decent water pressure, which honestly matters more than most people admit until they’re standing under a sad trickle at 7 AM. The staff strikes that perfect balance between helpful and not hovering, and check-in was refreshingly smooth. I actually overheard them helping another guest figure out local transit options, going way beyond the typical “here’s your key card” routine.

Here’s the thing about the location – it’s one of those spots that works better than it looks on paper. Sure, you’re not right in the thick of the tourist chaos, but that’s actually a blessing. It’s quiet enough that you’ll sleep well (no street noise keeping you up), but you’re still close enough to everything that matters. I found myself walking to dinner most nights, and there’s something nice about staying somewhere that feels more like a neighborhood than a tourist trap. The 8.2 rating makes total sense once you’re there – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but it nails all the fundamentals that actually matter when you’re traveling. Honestly, I’d stay here again without hesitation, especially for the price point. Sometimes the best places are the ones that just quietly do everything right.

  Brilliant little hotel, outstanding staff at reception. They were super nice (at arrival and departure). I felt really welcome right from the outset. Loved it. I booked a single room which was super clean, even had aircon and tea and coffee facilities (that is certainly not standard in Germany) Loved it. Am very happily going back there for my next visit in the Elbphilharmonie
  
  What could be improved: Car parking is announced but a bit of a gamble. There are a handful of spaces outside the hotel and alternatively there is a parking house nearby, however that comes at an extra cost (which wasn't in the ad). Still I was lucky and found the a free space just outside the hotel.

  What could be improved: No ceramic cup in the room to make tea. Just paper cups. Difficult to hold when hot. Mentioned this on the second day to staff. She came back with only another paper cup. Unsatisfactory. Not until the third day did another staff member provide a ceramic / glass cup.

  Room was good, location was good. I did not try the breakfast but the smell from the kitchen was quite enticing.
  
  What could be improved: The fact that I had to write my own data into a paper sheet. This is the 21st century and they are still using paper to write the personal data of customers instead of writing them down directly into the computer.
  
  Also, I dislike that they request too much data from me. They shouldn't. It's invasive AF.
