Hotel Description
You know what? Hotel Preuss im Dammtorpalais is one of those places that surprises you – and I mean that in the best way. When I first walked up to it, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star spot in Hamburg. But there’s something about this place that just works, especially if you’re the type who values character over cookie-cutter luxury.
The location is actually pretty brilliant if you know Hamburg at all. You’re right in the thick of things near the Dammtor area – I could literally walk to the trade fair grounds without breaking a sweat, and getting to the Alster lake took maybe ten minutes on foot. The whole Neustadt district is right there, which means you’ve got that mix of business energy during the day and decent restaurants within stumbling distance at night. I stayed here during one of the busier conference seasons, and while the area gets a bit hectic with all the suits rushing around, the hotel itself stayed surprisingly quiet. The building has this old-school Hamburg vibe – you can tell it’s got history in its bones, but they’ve done the renovations thoughtfully without stripping away all the personality.
What really got me was the staff, honestly. Check-in was smooth (no waiting around while they hunt for your reservation), and the front desk folks actually knew their neighborhood. When I asked about getting to St. Pauli later that evening, the guy didn’t just point me toward a taxi – he walked me through the S-Bahn connections and even mentioned which car to get on for the easiest exit. That’s the kind of local knowledge you don’t get everywhere. The rooms are… well, they’re 3-star rooms, so don’t expect marble bathrooms or turndown service. But everything worked properly – hot water stayed hot, WiFi didn’t cut out during video calls, and the beds were actually comfortable. I mean, I’ve stayed in supposed 4-star places where the mattress felt like a medieval torture device, so that’s not nothing. The windows open properly too, which is huge if you’re like me and hate stuffy hotel air. Some mornings I could hear the trams rumbling by, but it wasn’t that jarring early-morning construction noise that ruins your sleep – more like gentle city sounds that remind you you’re actually in Hamburg, not some sterile hotel bubble. Parking was straightforward enough, though you’ll pay for it – but honestly, that’s Hamburg for you. If you’re thinking about this place, I’d say go for it if you want to actually experience the city rather than hide from it in some fancy chain hotel. The 7.8 rating makes sense – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it does everything it promises to do, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Hotel is located in a very nice area, in a close proximity to the city center (10min walk from the subway).
Staff were helpful and friendly.
Room was clean a spacious enough (we had a family room).
There is a street parking (10EUR/day) which is very cheap and convenient (if you can find a space that is).
There are some restaurants and bakeries within a walking distance (5-10 min).
What could be improved: This is a University area, so it might be a bit noisy (one night we had a party going nearby till 3am).
The number of family room is limited, so check what you get before you travel with kid(s).Kelly from Spain – 6 August 2023 (9/10)

I really enjoyed my 2-night stay here. The rooms are spacious, clean, with large windows that have a great view of central Hamburg. The owners were very friendly and helpful when I needed to ask for a favor.
Also. This hotel as a whole has a very special atmosphere – as if you were transported back in time on one hand, or maybe you are Sherlock Holmes traveling somewhere to uncover a mysterious crime… and all these associations I mean in a good way! 😀
