Hotel Preuss im Dammtorpalais Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Hotel Preuss im Dammtorpalais on Moorweidenstraße, you immediately notice this isn’t your typical chain hotel. The building has this elegant, almost residential feel that makes you think you’re entering someone’s well-appointed townhouse rather than a three-star hotel. I mean, the Dammtorpalais itself has quite a history — it’s one of those Hamburg buildings that locals actually point out to visitors. The entrance feels intimate, which honestly sets the tone for the entire experience.

The Rothenbaum Advantage

Here’s what I love about this location — you’re in Rothenbaum, which is sort of Hamburg’s answer to a sophisticated residential neighborhood without being stuffy about it. You can walk to the Alster lakes in about ten minutes, and the city center is close enough that you don’t need to plan your day around transportation. The area has this lovely mix of locals going about their business and enough cafés where you can sit with a coffee and actually feel like you’re experiencing the city. Plus, couples seem to really get this neighborhood — there’s something romantic about those tree-lined streets that just works.

Your Room Experience

The rooms here aren’t huge, but they’re thoughtfully designed in a way that makes the space feel comfortable rather than cramped. Each room has character — you know, actual personality instead of that generic hotel sameness. The furnishings lean traditional but not old-fashioned, if that makes sense. What really impressed me was the attention to details like proper lighting for reading and windows that actually open (which you’d be surprised how many hotels get wrong). The bathrooms are well-appointed, and honestly, everything just feels clean and well-maintained.

Exploring the Neighborhood

One thing that struck me about staying here is how easy it becomes to slip into Hamburg life. There’s a great little restaurant scene within walking distance — not tourist traps, but places where you’ll hear German conversations at the next table. The nearby Dammtor area connects you to both the university district and the business center, so there’s always this interesting energy. You can stroll to Planten un Blomen park when you want green space, or head toward the Alster when you’re in the mood for that quintessential Hamburg waterside experience.

Why Guests Love It

What keeps people coming back to Hotel Preuss im Dammtorpalais is this combination of genuine Hamburg character and solid hospitality. The staff actually knows the neighborhood — they’ll give you directions to places that aren’t in guidebooks but probably should be. Recent guests consistently mention the location, and I get why. You’re not staying in some anonymous hotel district; you’re staying in a real part of the city. For couples especially, there’s something appealing about having a comfortable base in a neighborhood that invites evening walks and morning coffee runs. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying somewhere with a story, not just passing through.

Hamburg hotels keep food lovers close to fish market dawns, Portuguese quarter tapas, and St. Pauli bars.

  • Fabear from Denmark – 19 December 2023 (9/10)

Hotel is located in a very nice area, in a close proximity to the city center (10min walk from the subway).
    Staff were helpful and friendly.
Room was clean a spacious enough (we had a family room).
There is a street parking (10EUR/day) which is very cheap and convenient (if you can find a space that is).
There are some restaurants and bakeries within a walking distance (5-10 min).

What could be improved: This is a University area, so it might be a bit noisy (one night we had a party going nearby till 3am).
The number of family room is limited, so check what you get before you travel with kid(s).

  • Maria from Germany – 18 April 2023 (9/10)

I really enjoyed my 2-night stay here. The rooms are spacious, clean, with large windows that have a great view of central Hamburg. The owners were very friendly and helpful when I needed to ask for a favor.

Also. This hotel as a whole has a very special atmosphere – as if you were transported back in time on one hand, or maybe you are Sherlock Holmes traveling somewhere to uncover a mysterious crime… and all these associations I mean in a good way! 😀
