Honestly, when I first heard the name Hotel Volksschule, I had to do a double-take – turns out “Volksschule” means elementary school in German, and yeah, this place actually used to be one. But don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s some dusty old building with tiny desks and chalkboards. They’ve transformed this former school into something pretty remarkable, keeping all the character while making it feel genuinely luxurious.

Walking through the entrance, you immediately notice how they’ve played with the original architecture – those high ceilings and wide hallways that schools always have? They work incredibly well for a hotel. The rooms are spacious in a way that modern hotels rarely manage, and I mean genuinely spacious, not just “we put the bed at an angle and called it a suite” spacious. What really got me was the attention to detail – they’ve kept some of the original features like the old wooden floors and oversized windows, but everything feels fresh and well-maintained. The 4-star rating isn’t just marketing speak here; you can tell they’ve invested in quality linens, proper lighting, and bathrooms that actually make sense. The whole place has this warm, almost nostalgic vibe without being kitschy about it.

You know what impressed me most? The staff actually seems to enjoy working there, which honestly makes such a difference when you’re traveling. Check-in was smooth – no weird upselling or making you wait around while they “prepare your room.” And that 9.1 rating? I get it now. It’s not trying to be the flashiest place in town, but everything just works the way it should. The WiFi is solid throughout the building (those thick old walls can be tricky, but they’ve figured it out), and the soundproofing is surprisingly good for a converted building. I stayed on what I’m pretty sure used to be the second floor of classrooms, and even though there was some street activity below, it never really bothered me. The whole conversion concept could have been gimmicky, but they’ve handled it with enough restraint that it feels authentic rather than themed. If you’re looking for somewhere that has actual personality and doesn’t feel like every other cookie-cutter hotel, this place delivers without making you sacrifice comfort for character.

  Beautifully presented, modern, decorated to a high standard. It was interesting that the hotel had once been a school. The room had great facilities and we loved the outside courtyard for coffee etc. excellent customer service: the staff were friendly and accommodating even though our grasp of the German language is limited at best.
  
  What could be improved: Nothing really. The only thing that was slightly confusing was the entrance when we first arrived.

  This is the second time we have stayed at this hotel and it never disappoints. It is very close to a station and easy to get into central Hamburg. The breakfasts are excellent and a real bonus. There are several supermarkets very close to the hotel so easy to get what you need. The shower is amazing. The staff are very helpful and professional. Lots of pamphlets available for things to do.
  
  What could be improved: A small kettle in the room would complete the experience.
