So here’s the thing about Hotel Wedina an der Alster – it’s one of those places that actually lives up to its 4-star rating, which honestly surprised me a bit. I mean, you see these boutique hotels scattered around Hamburg’s Alster area and sometimes they’re trying way too hard, but Wedina has this relaxed confidence that just works.

The location is pretty much perfect if you want to feel like you’re staying in a residential neighborhood rather than some tourist bubble. You’re right by the Alster lake, which means morning walks are basically mandatory (and trust me, you’ll want to do them). The whole area has this quiet, almost residential vibe during the day, but you’re still close enough to the city center that you don’t feel isolated. I actually loved hearing the occasional sound of boats on the water instead of constant traffic – it’s surprisingly peaceful for a city hotel. The building itself feels more like a converted townhouse than a typical hotel, which gives it character but also means the rooms vary quite a bit in size and layout. Some have these great little nooks and interesting angles that make them feel special, though if you’re someone who needs everything perfectly square and predictable, you might find it quirky rather than charming.

What really sets this place apart is the attention to detail without being fussy about it. The staff genuinely seems to know what they’re doing – check-in was smooth, they had actual recommendations for restaurants (not just the tourist traps), and when I mentioned I was interested in the local art scene, they pointed me toward some galleries I never would have found otherwise. The breakfast was solid too, nothing revolutionary but good quality ingredients and they clearly care about sourcing locally when possible. You know what I appreciated most though? The WiFi actually worked reliably throughout the building, which sounds basic but you’d be amazed how many places still struggle with that. The rooms themselves are comfortable without being flashy – good beds, decent bathrooms, and enough space to spread out your stuff without feeling cramped. Parking can be a bit tricky in this neighborhood (it’s mostly street parking), but they’ll help you figure it out and honestly, you probably won’t need a car much once you’re settled in. The 8.9 rating makes complete sense to me – it’s the kind of place that gets the important stuff right and adds just enough personality to make you remember it fondly. If you’re looking for a Hamburg base that feels more like staying in a nice neighborhood than a hotel district, and you don’t need a pool or fancy spa amenities, Wedina delivers exactly what it promises.

  Cute little boutique hotel by the Alster with a stunning garden and a nice breakfast selection. Location is a little far from the city center but we knew this going into it and preferred being in a quieter part of town. There were lots of nearby restaurants and cafes too which was nice. The room was really simple but had most of everything we needed. We reserved parking for the night and the staff so kindly allowed us to keep our car there well after our checkout.
  
  What could be improved: We couldn’t control the temperature in the room for some reason. It was a hot day and we had to open a window to prevent from sweating through the night.

  Very cozy and nice hotel in a wonderful location, 10 minutes from the central station. Also very close to Alster lake!
  The room was already for check-in 3 hours later without additional cost.
  Room was very comfortable and clean, fully equipped according to the description. Even tissues were there!
  For sure a nice place to stay in Hamburg!
  Additionally, very nice support at the reception desk, I asked for a change to the invoice and it was delivered very quickly!

  I stayed hear for three nights for a work trip. I found it cozy and comfortable, and loved the big window onto the garden. It was much nicer than staying in a soulless corporate hotel.
  
  What could be improved: There is no coffee or tea making equipment in the room. I like to have a cup of coffee in bed before facing the world, so this was not ideal.
