Raphael Hotel Wälderhaus Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to the Raphael Hotel Wälderhaus, you immediately notice something different — this isn’t your typical Hamburg hotel. The building has this distinctive wooden facade that feels almost like a modern treehouse, which makes perfect sense once you realize you’re in Wilhelmsburg’s Inselpark area. I mean, the name literally translates to “forest house,” and they weren’t kidding around with that concept. The three-star property sits right at Am Inselpark 19, and honestly, the location feels like a well-kept secret that locals would rather not share with tourists.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about Wilhelmsburg — it’s this island district that most visitors completely overlook, but couples seem to get it (the ratings back this up). You’re surrounded by actual parkland and green spaces, yet central Hamburg is just a quick train ride away. The Inselpark itself was created for the International Garden Show, so you’ve got these beautiful walking paths and gardens literally at your doorstep. What’s really clever is how the hotel capitalizes on this setting — you get that peaceful, almost countryside feeling while still being connected to the city. The S-Bahn connections are actually pretty solid from here, though you’ll want to check the evening schedules if you’re planning late nights in the city center.
The Rooms & Design
The rooms continue that nature-inspired theme without going overboard with it. You’ll find warm wood tones and earth colors that feel calming rather than gimmicky — it’s like they took the forest concept and made it sophisticated. The windows are generous, and if you’re lucky enough to get a park-facing room, the views are genuinely lovely. I particularly appreciated how quiet everything was; the sound insulation works well, and since you’re not on a busy city street, you actually get proper rest. The bathrooms are modern and well-designed, though not huge — but honestly, for a three-star place, they’ve done a solid job with the space they have.
Dining & Amenities
The restaurant leans into regional cuisine with a focus on sustainability, which fits the whole environmental ethos of the place. Breakfast was better than I expected — fresh, local ingredients and they clearly put thought into sourcing. You know what surprised me? The conference facilities are actually quite good, and I noticed several business groups using the space effectively. There’s also a sauna area that feels like a natural extension of the forest theme. It’s not elaborate, but after a day of exploring Hamburg or walking through the park, it hits the spot perfectly.
Why Guests Love It
The 8.3 rating makes sense once you spend time here — this hotel knows exactly what it is and delivers on that promise consistently. Couples particularly seem to appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and the fact that you can have romantic park walks without dealing with city crowds. The staff genuinely seems to care about the guest experience, and there’s this relaxed vibe throughout the property that’s hard to fake. If you’re looking for something different from the typical Hamburg hotel experience — something that connects you with nature while keeping you close to urban attractions — the Raphael Hotel Wälderhaus delivers exactly that balance.

Very good location and friendly staff. The room was excellent, and the shower was very hot and powerful, which is a nice change from most places we've stayed.
What could be improved: It's only minor, but having tea and coffee in the room would have been nice.Salvador from Mexico – 10 February 2025 (9/10)

Great hotel with interesting design and comfortable rooms. Close to public transport and very quiet. Fantastic park for walking or running
What could be improved: The location seemed a bit "abandoned" for such a beautiful hotel, not much happening in the area.Georgiev from Bulgaria – 3 September 2024 (9/10)
Very friendly staff! Quiet area, close to train station , close to arena for concerts
What could be improved: Everything was perfect!Mari from United States – 21 August 2024 (8/10)

The location was convenient for groceries and the metro.
What could be improved: Google maps did not know where the hotel was. We ended up walking through a swamp to get there. Breakfast was expensive at the hotel, so we walked to a very convenient, nearby, shopping centre and bought breakfast there each morning.Thompfe from Germany – 17 June 2024 (9/10)
Great stay! Exceptionel friendly and helpful staff at reception. I'll come back definitely!
